Here's a screenshot from a Joel McCrea film (I think it's Foreign Correspondent) which shows what those little flaps are on the upper chest of trench coats. They are often called gun flaps, but I call them wind flaps. Although McCrea is not in focus in this image, you can see how when the lapel is fully buttoned up the small flap buttons down over the top of the lapel to keep the rain from dripping down inside the lapel (and inside the coat).

^ What good photos. Does anyone recognize the bearded old man in the trench coat? I'm guessing the mayor of a French town recently liberated at the end of WW2, but I don't know.

The photo was taken in the town of Waidring, Austria where Streicher was captured. The officer to the right is Major Henry Plitt of the 101st Airborne. Streicher was later tried in Nuremberg, convicted and sentence to death in the same trial as Goring. Streicher was executed about ten days later.

When Major Plitt was discharged in 1946, he had been awarded four Purple Hearts for his various wounds, and the Silver and Bronze stars, each with a cluster.

Plitt joined the Army Reserves in 1964 and had attained the rank of Brigadier General before his retirement. He died in 1993.

I recently got this trenchcoat, used. It's in great condition and I've washed it up. Cotton blend shell, but it's like a microfibre and soft to the touch and extremely lightweight. Odd detailing, I'm guessing 1980s, but I like stuff like that. The silhouette is nice: when the belt it done up it gives a nice masculine V-shape with lots of drape. It's a beauty.

Here are some photos from the French crime film "Flic Story" starring Alain Delon as a police inspector. I watched this last night and it's pretty good; there's a middle third of the film which is kinda boring, but overall it's solid (and, tellingly, large parts of the movie are stuck in my head this morning so it clearly made an impression). Delon's character wears this green trench coat in the movie. It looks like a surplus post-WW2 US Army coat.

Here are some on-set photos from the production of Melville's "Le Cercle Rouge" starring Delon. He wears this coat throughout the film which was clearly filmed during winter and the cold weather is evident on the screen.

Here's Yves Montand behind the scenes on the same film.

From the short-lives TV series Constantine, Matt Smith wearing a short single-breasted Burberry trench coat, which they sold for a few years several years ago. The series was really good in my opinion, sadly cancelled after 12 episodes or thereabouts.
