Tinnitus sufferers:
What to you do to cope ??​

Hearing aids with masking devices ?
White Noise ?
No nicotine, caffiene......


I've been dealing with this for the past 20 years and am seriously considering hearing aids with masking.
Thing is: if I'm gonna shell out a couple grand, these things had better perform :rage:
What do you guys do that helps the sitch ??

Any kind of white noise helps me sleep at night. Mine is fairly bad but that is the only time I really notice it - when it's dead quiet.

You might also try the tv or radio on at very low volume to distract you with a sleep timer.

does yours disturb you through the day as well? Or are you looking for something to wear to concerts and the like?

I only have trouble with mine when it gets quiet, like now, the tv isn't on & can hear just this high pitched whistling. It's irritating but I've had it for so long I don't tend to notice that much. At night I always have a film on to fall asleep to. For other reasons as well as the distraction lol

At clubs or gigs I wear ear plugs.

I can't hear people right in front of my face (or, indeed, next to my ear) if there is a lot of background noise, even with just a tv or radio so people have come to realise there really is no point talking to me if we're in a noisy bar or someplace similar lol

Other than that, I have no tips at all really [huh]

Along with the hearing loss, the tinnitus is now affecting my ability to communicate with others.
Phone conversations are extremely frustrating ....can never seem to get the volume loud enough......and soft spoken, higher pitched dolls are really tough for me to hear.

My wife says its "selective hearing"...................not ALL of the time

Thats the same kind of problem I have, selective hearing.

No no, really though, apparently my 'top end' has gone so I can't hear higher pitches too well. It looks pretty on the graph the doctor has though.

Does yours tend to get worse if you're stressed? I don't know if it is actually worse or if it's the fact I'm stresed that makes me notice it more, but it turns into a kind of sshhhhhhhhhh noise. I'm just odd

I've had this for years. can't hear in a noisy room either. I've learned to be a pretty good lip reader though, other than that I just live with it.[huh]

Lip reading......yep. Its a reality for me, as well.

The stress correlation is interesting.
Havent really thought much about it......maybe the increase in blood pressure affects the ringing (or perception of ringing) ???

Ive been sleeping with a sound machine for over 10 years now and it does help a great deal but the problems I'm having during the day are increasing and I am really considering hearing aids.

I fear that a day will come when I can't shut it out anymore. It really is a terrible thing.

Word to the un-afflicted: If it's loud, you need ear plugs. For the rest, I don't know of anything that will help un-do a mis-spent youth of highpowered rifles and pistols with no hearing protection.

Vermont Country Store sells a product called "Bio-Ear" that is a natural herbal remedy that is supposed to help with ringing in your ears.

Mine has been really bad for about 15 years now. But I'd rather listen to the whistling than the neighbors kids upstairs or the local idiot complaining about his hernia operation. Its at its worst when I'm out in the mountains fishing or sometimes when I'm a bit groggy and think my cell phone is ringing (I really need a loud annoying ringtone!).

I've spoken to a few tinnitus sufferers who claim that drastically reducing the sodium in one's diet can really help - almost to the point of eliminating it. I'm not a sufferer, so I can't vouch for the method's effectiveness, but I will say that on days I've consumed a great deal of processed or salty food, I have noticed that my ears tend to ring quite severely, so it's possible these tinnitus sufferers didn't have tinnitus at all, but rather an over-salted diet.

My brother is deaf in one ear from Vietnam.

I have moderate ringing in my ears. Possible causes: the Army, motorcycles and scuba diving. Any time I take Advil the ringing increases within 30 minutes of taking Advil.

This is an interesting angle to explore for those who suffer from tinnitus.

wow I had no idea so many on FL suffered from this too.

Fwiw, I had my hearing checked several times in the last few years; I have lost only a tad of my higher frequency reception. But the hiss and high pitched tinnitus definitely affect my hearing in noisy situations.

Still, it was comforting to know that beneath the tinnitus. my hearing acuity was actually still very good for someone my age (especially considering the years of exposure to loud music). I'd highly recommend getting an audiological screening periodically to assess your levels.

My ears ring as well, it affects my hearing when there is a lot of background noise. But in normal situations, my hearing is still good.

I've found that taking tylenol, advil, aspirin, or any other kind of pain killer increases the volume of the ringing substantially. If you do take any pain killers try to cut back (especially in the evening before bed), this may help as well.

Holy moley.. I am throwing my name into the pile. I notice when I go on vacation I dont' get it as bad... I dont' know if that is because of less stress (blood pressure, etc) or just getting out of this dry dry arid climate helps.

I am also considering moving where I sleep AWAY from any electrical outlets. I swear there is a connection! Seriously, there is an outlet just inches from my head when I lay down. [huh]
