I stopped by the Tilley flagship store today to check out the felt fedora. I'd say it's closer to an Akubra in style and feel than a custom or vintage fedora. That being said, I tried on the 7 7/8, and it was too small. I tried on another...same deal. Problem was, the "retracted" ear flaps take up some room along the sweatband. When I lowered the flaps, it fit.

Soooo, if you plan on purchasing one via mail order, size up!

David

PS In response to a question on another thread, the back of the brim can be flipped up, with some encouragement.

Does it matter?
That's the one drawback to all Tilley hats. The different styles fit different. The lightweight LT hats fits smaller than all others. The cotton T3 fit bigger than all the others.

This is a good reason why it's best to buy from a store who can touch and feel the hat you want so you can ask them questions. You should also review a hat stores return/exchange policy before buying.

Yup. I've got a 24" circumference to my head, so generally a 7 5/8 or a 7 3/4 are perfect, depending on the brand.

With my Tilley Winter Hat (pretty much the most amazing hat ever, really -- perfect for a Philadelphia winter), I'm a 7 7/8. I purchased online and had to do an exchange.

Is that a put down, or a backhanded compliment? What's your experience with Akubra? I own an Akubra, and find it's the ideal hat for everyday wear: It's well made, durable, handles the elements with aplomb, and is stylish. I'll admit it's not a custom made felt, but then I'd rather wear it than admire it hanging on a hat post.
