Hmmm, Fed Reserve Chairman Bernanke & USTreasurySecretary Geitner seem to have worn almost the same tie to testify in front of Congress...

Xmas gifts?

I suppose there are fewer conservatively-styled red and blue ties than there are Washington bureaucrats so this sort of thing will happen now and again.

Is there a rule, or guideline, for matching the collar style with the face style or type? In other words, what style collar looks best with different face styles?

Bernanke: nice long tab collar, Geithner: very wide spread collar. Winner: Bernanke.

I second that. Spread collars seem to be quite popular these days, but are almost never worn properly. Geithner's all white spread collar shirt is bland, and he could have dressed it up with a fuller knot.

I think the average person can wear different collar styles, and it's usually more a matter of matching collar style and knot type. A wide spread collar and a tight four-in-hand looks unseemly. I think the balance between the two relative to a person's face is usually what determines whether it works or not.

Yep, fuller faces are better served by a point collar and thinner faces by a spread collar. Both men have chosen their collars and ties well.

I could very well be wrong, but I thought the reverse was true? A sort of "match your face" deal, like wearing a bow tie to about the width of your face, to sort of 'normalize' the smallness or fullness of your face.

It seems like the contrast between a full face and point collar will actually accentuate the fullness of the face. Same goes for thin faces and spread collars.

It serves as a counterbalance.
