Thurlow Leather World-Deer skin MC Jacket

Deer season started October 1st in Illinois, USA. I don't hunt, but deer Hunting is very popular in my area. Many get killed on the roads through out the year. Everyone seems to have a story of a car/deer encounter.

I'm not sure who does the deer tanning around here. There are taxidermist. I play music with a guy who has a house full of trophies. There have been and continue to be deerskin clothing makers in the mid-west where I live.

Thurlow is/was in San Diego, California. I just can't find my original source regarding Thurlow. I went through my Tanaka books, but got lost! I know there is a reference in one of the books. I have not done much research on the company. Like to hear about them.

This is another stunner in Deer skin. It feels like silk, my girlfriend said buttey. Truely does fit like a glove! That is the expression I was searching for. the Finish is amazing.

The interior and label look very much like a local Deerskin maker. I have seen later more modern collar label. This label has the hand made shop look. The use of Velcro, which looks like original work, dates it. Maybe 70s?

I have information on Thurlow as I new Deloris the daughter of the original owner her dad. I have an old catalog from 1993 and part of a catalog from 1952. I am at my shop today and will give you all the information I know tomorrow.

This is what I know about Thurlow the company. I believe they started around 1940 and the shop was taken over by his son Larry and his wife Dolores.
I first meet Dolores around 1993 via a phone conversation on a matter she was helping me out with. Dolores had incredible insight on Deer Skin garments and the history of Deer Skin and its durability for motorcycle garments. I believe her son Gary took over the shop at some point in time.
This was there old address 4807 Mercury Street, Suite E,, San Diego, California, United States, 92111. Sadly they are no longer in business. I have been told a few different reasons why they are gone but it is all here say. I come across there garments from time to time as customers bring them into my shop for repairs. I can tell you that Thurlow deer skin garments stand the test of time they hold up. I do have a complete catalog from 1993 that has pricing, sizing, photos and some reviews of there garments. I hope this helps.

Thanks Alan, great information! I was born in 1952!

Yes, they did know how to sew Deerskin. The finish too, it feels like satin. Someone on my youtube channel said it looked a like a wet suit! Truley fits like a glove. I notice in the 52 catalog they emphasis the glove making.

I saw this one sorta by accident. I look forward to seeing more of their jackets. They are special in the world of Deerskin.

I'll be in touch on another matter you may be able to help with. I've thought about asking you and this is perfect timing. Thanks again

@Will Zach I belive I may have purchased the jacket you are talking about. The jacket I bought looked great in the pictures, but upon receiving the lining had a bunch of tears and the leather was actually in rougher shape in real life. I ended returning it. No ill will towards the seller and actually had a pleasant chat with the him about the makers of thurlow jackets. I'm going to be on the look out for more deerskin jackets.
