Hi Folks, please be patient with me as i am a newbie to the lounge, and although i have researched the subject a little , please forgive me if im asking a silly question .!! I have an interest In buying an A2 Jacket , but i have a concern about which hide to choose, i Want something that i can use and abuse, and will just get better with age , and my initial thought were maybe a Seal brown Oil Pull , But ive heared that they break in very nicely within several months., and look like it could have belonged to a veteran in about a year, but i am a little concerned about how it will age in the long term , say 10 years , is the fact that its been through the the oilpull process a deciding factor on how the jacket will last in the long term , and will it still look like an A2 after 10 years or will it more resemble a chamios leather !!, i wonder if anyone has any experience of owning an oilpull (Preferably the current material, as i understand it has changed) i would be interested to see any photos and hear any thoughts from owners with regards to how it is aging,
Many thanks , A fellow Sufferer ,

The new oil-pull doesn't suede at all. It appears to be a whole new type of leather which is closer in appearance to Front Quarter Horsehide but a little softer and slightly lighter in weight. No doubt that this leather will outlast you!
Make sure that all other components are chosen for being very long lasting....AERO branded zipper instead of Talon, heavier lining (cotton drill or a colourful tartan) etc.
If you decide to go for OP HH anyway it doesn't matter if the zip and the lining are authentic in terms of being faithful to the spec sheet of the A2. It will be a cracking 40s civilian flight jacket!!

I think the sample I have from Amanda at Aero is the OP HH of which Jan is speaking. It's looked very much like FQHH with a slightly duller appearance. No suede at all. The sample I received was quite large so I cut it in half and nailed one half to my fence about 8 months ago to see how it would age and have left it untreated. I very much like this impressionable leather.

Neat idea, any pictures of the two samples after being run through that test?

It's softer and more pliable than FQHH in brown (based on my samples) and I was really close to using it. Looks the same thickness, but just not as "raw"
In the end, it's preference. It looks like a great hide. If someone fears the stiffness of the FQHH they may want to consider it. It no doubt would make for a killer jacket...
