Thoroughbred Hats?

Thorobred looks to be the same hat as a Lyon 100% beaver I have. I think they were a Biltmore made hat.

So are you saying that Thoroughbred was a second label and did not make their own hats?

I make no claims to be an expert. What I see is a liner, size tag and box tag that all are identical to the Lyon and I believe Biltmores of the 60's and 70's. It could be the three are separate but sourced components from the same place.

So I found this one at a car boot sale in my local town in England, the seller said that he thinks it was bought in Florida, (Sellers will tell you anything at my boot though) its got a fair few moth bites (surface) and some dirt marks, it also needs reblocking as it was crushed "in the car" as the seller said 8x's in total the size label says 6 3/4 Custom Made, so alas not even close to my size but i got it free with this 6 hat stands I purchased.

Here is my late 50's? Addition for this thread. Inky black soft velour you can loose your fingers in. A little over 4 inch crown as bashed......3 1/4 inch brim. Cool extra bling on the ribbon......very Jack Palance or Lee Van Cleef. I really like this one..........,just wish it was my size.......

Didn't know Thoroughbred had its own thread. I no longer have pics of how my 10X natural beaver arrived or the telescope crease I put in it first. With a Telescope I wasn't wearing it much so I turned it into a Civil War gorilla hat for Living History activities.

I think Thoroughbred may have one of those many St. Louis hat companies that fell under the Langenberg / Beaver Brands family.

You see Lion hats with similar builds, tags, labels, boxes, etc. (Note: There are also "The Lion Brand" hats that are a different lineage.)

Langenburg (Lion Hats)
Founded in 1860 as Gauss, Hunicke & Krause in St. Louis, the Langenburg Hat Co is the forerunner of Beaver Brand hats.

The company went through numerous mutations in its early years, as partners came and went. Gauss, Hunicke & Krause of 1860 became Gauss-Hunicke & Company in 1863 when Mr. Krause sold his interest. In 1881 the company was incorporated as Gauss-Hunicke Hat Company.

When Mr. Hunicke retired in 1885, Mr. Shelton joined the company, and it became Gauss-Shelton until 1901, when Mr. Shelton left to join White-Branch-McConkin, and Mr. Langenberg joined the firm. The company was renamed the Langenberg Hat Company in 1919.

In 1922 Langenberg absorbed the White-Branch Hat Company of St. Louis, and in 1926 they acquired Parrotte, McIntyre & Co. of Chicago.

The company moved its operations from St. Louis to New Haven Missouri in 1928, where it formed and shaped hats from stock materials manufactured at other locations. During peak production, the factory produced and shipped nearly 500,000 hats domestically and around the world each year. The facility closed in the late 1990s and the company was liquidated in 2000.

Just got a 10x Thoroughbred western hat on eBay. I'm a city slicker, and I never heard of this brand before, but sometimes a western hat gets my attention. Figured it was worth the $85 BIN price. I guess from the style it is 1950s or earlier.

I believe that this was a sub brand of The Beaver Hat Co.I have one and it came in a BB box.

Here is my addition to the Thoroughbred thread. It has a six inch crown, and three and a half inch brim. Unfortunately the box has been cut down, eliminating the Thoroughbred name. I am very happy with the comfort and quality

Here is a Maple Grizzly Thoroughbred. The liner and sweat are from the retailer. The box shows it was sent from the factory to Wilson's. The feathers had to go, and a different crease done.

Thoroughbred and Beaver hats seem to fit me so perfectly. They feel like they were made for my head shape. I think they made very nice hats.
