I'm pretty sure NONE of the hats I've bought recently have chinese fur ...not guilt here.
I don't buy it either. Vintage fedoras are quality items but not necessarily a more ethical choice.I'm not sure that I buy into the idea that the vintage fur trade was more humane than modern.
It's unfortunate the discussion of the ethics of animal use production gets reshaped into pointing out how extreme PETA is therefore their message must be flawed. I disagree with a lot of their attitudes and policy but I realize their fervor is the result of the breadth and depth of the problem. This thread started out as a fairly straightforward opportunity to discuss the ethics (problematic to some, not to others) of fur production, but has drifted into a rant against PETA. Too bad, really, because PETA is merely a blip on the radar of a centuries-long and inevitable consideration of how species interact now and will in the future. (Ingrid Newkirk may well be regarded as a visionary woman centuries from now.)
To return to the crux of what can be considered a choice one way or the other, I vote vintage only.
Cheers

Can we please move this thread to the thread graveyard (Observation Bar)? It's only tangentially related to hats, is certainly enjoyed by no one, and has only enhanced the Lounge by allowing me to add to my ever-growing "ignore" list - 65 or so members, many from this thread alone.
Yeah, this is a concern for me. Rabbit I can understand from the Australian perspective where they are a pest species, although that doesn't make it less cruel to kill an animal for it's fur.Someone just shared this on Facebook and when I watched it, I just felt guilty about wearing fur felt hats.

I was now wondering if other fur farms where most felt makers get their fur are like this one in China.
Is there even a more humane method of extracting the fur from rabbits? I hope in other fur farms they at least kill the animal before skinning 'em. :eeek:
