I do commercial and industrial doors, no house doors. Believe it or not, doors for residences, different animal. I believe the decline in the custom orders is not due to only price, but longer lead time and everyone wants to look like everyone else. Boring storefronts etc. Home Depot and the like can't compare to what I can do. Not even close.

I can do the artwork, but I don’t know what material was used to plug-in the holes
on the wire-screen door.
Paint alone will not cover the holes.
Any idea?

It's funny you say that as when we were doing our restoration, you could "feel" the pressure from the industry to "conform" and "just do what everyone else does." They never say it like that, but they "nudge" you into accepting similar / look-alike work.

We knew what we wanted and resisted all that pressure aggressively (and it was exhausting). We found an architect and contractor who would do what we wanted (it took a long time) and the "millwork" we had done is truly custom.

It was all designed from scratch and built to specs that my girlfriend and I took out of design books from the '20s. We had one kitchen door made - real oak, reclaimed '20s glass, real mullions (not laid on top like some today - the mullions hold the glass in place) and design feature / proportions direct from furniture design books from the '20s. And the door weighs more than a small car, but because of all the right details (reclaimed hardware from other doors in the building that had been thrown away - thankfully, the super had saved it), it looks as if it has always been there.

To your point, you are not getting work or results like that (or, I'm sure, like your custom work) from Home Depot.

What's fun is that when people come over, you can tell they feel the difference. While most people, of course, say nice things - I'm not asserting everyone truly likes what we did (I'm sure many don't), but they have all commented on how much it "feels" '20s, "looks like it's always been here."

One woman (who is kinda pushy), basically, announced that she wanted to see our apartment and walked in (right at the end of the renovation). She all but said it wasn't her taste and didn't look "finished or updated," but she said then and since - when we run into her - that she's never seen an apartment in our building that looks so of the original period. She said she felt like she had walked into an apartment from the 1920s. Despite what I don't think were overall complimentary comments from her, her's are still our favorite as they are genuine as she does not care what she says.

The word "updated" is one of the worst things the Boys have foisted upon us in recent decades. There aren't a lot of words that make my flesh crawl, but "updated" in the real-estate sense is high on the list.

Since the concept - "updating -" is so counter to ours (and, probably, most Fedora Lounge member's) aesthetic and, well, view of things in general, the word just flows by me like so much other marketing dross. It's so obviously transparent - you need to buy stuff to update and, to stay up to date, you need to do this regularly - that I find it more silly than anger inducing.

I'll stand arm and arm with you about some of the deceitful, fraudulent and venal things the Boys do, but people are also responsible to have some awareness and I have enough confidence in people that they can see though the self-serving nonsense of "updating." And if they don't, well, I circle back to that being-responsible-for-yourself thingy.

There are screen patch kits available at your local hardware store or home improvement center.
It’s a simple fix and will actually add some rustic cache to your screen door IMO.
My grandfather ( I called him Papaw) had an old country store with double screen doors just like those. Pretty cool.

Thanks to you I discovered the materials needed for my project.
One method requires wax craft paper, gesso and
polymer paints which will
make it possible to achieve these results on metal screen doors.

A 10-year-old labrador recently became the guardian of nine ducklings after staff at Mountfitchet Castle in Essex saw them wandering around the grounds alone last Thursday.

"Fred the resident dog at the Castle stepped up to the challenge when nine little ducklings became orphaned last Thursday," Mountfitchet Castle wrote on Facebook. 'The ducklings' mum had disappeared and a member of staff found them waddling around the castle grounds alone. The team were very worried about the ducklings but Fred, a 10 year old Labrador, immediately took to them and has been babysitting ever since."

A neat story that did make me smile, thank you. I wonder if he realizes he was bred to retrieve dead ducks? Either way, everyone involved looks happy.

...missed Gronk last Saturday in the Belmont Stakes. The sin of supposition handicapping.;)

It was an enjoyable Triple Crown season and, in a way, better than American Pharoah's run as the "pressure" to be the first triple crown winner since Christ was born was over so that Justify's run could be appreciated in a less fervent atmosphere.

And I'm glad it looks like his owners plan to let him race throughout the '18 season and not just "retire" him immediately for the stud fees.

Justify's connections reportedly sold the stud fees to Coolmore for 78m.
Baffert will probably run Justify in the Breeder's Cup and next January's Pegasus, and a few prep races between;
so the big horse will be around for a while yet.
