Why do cats "meow" to humans and not
to each other?

I have seen Polo hiss & growl with other
cats over territoral rights at home but have never heard him "meow" to other
cats like he does to me.

Also, Polo will only answer me when I talk to him and prefers my company even
though I usually am not the one
that feeds him.

When cats meeooow it ususally means they want something & they have learned that by meowing to a human, they stand a good chance of getting what they want. :D

Makes sense!
When he wants out, he'll go to the door,
reach up and touch the doorknob with both front paws as if trying to turn it but cannot.
While he does this he makes sure I'm watching and will meow accordingly.
Soon as I open the door, he will make
another meow sound as if to say "thanks".
He also does this when I let him in.
When he wants to eat he makes a different sound.
At times he will bring home a bird and
leave it at the doorsteps.
I've noticed that when he does this...
he struts around the house with his chest
puffed up as if to say.... "I've made my contribution to the household!"

Sometimes I tell him... "a nice rib-eye steak would be nice once in while!"

He looks at me straight in the eye as
if to say.... be grateful with what I bring
ok?"

Why do cowboys wear two spurs? If one side of the horse goes, so does the other.

If they only wore one spur, they'd ride in circles. ;)

He's a very cool little guy, Polo!

Largely it... Kittens meow to their mothers when they want attention, but cats row out of the behaviour when no longer dependent on their mother. They do, however, realise that humans respond to meowing in the same way, and so they keep it up for them. There are nineteen known meow sounds, according to the research, though I suspect to some degree each cat or family of cats will vary in accordance to context. The late Marlene Marlowe was a dairy fiend, and she definitely had a very specific meow that indicated she wanted milk. Her sister, Greta, who is still with us, has a very distinct meow when she wants a treat, or into the bedroom when I've closed the door, or attention more generally....

Polo is a creature of habits and follows a routine.
I don’t need an alarm clock.
He will wake me up at the same time every morning.
First he will lay on my chest...which was cute when he was young and not as heavy.
Second, if I don’t open my eyes, he will then proceed to my ear real close and start
purring.
If I still don’t show signs of waking up...he proceeds with digging his claws into my chest.
That usually wakes me up.

Sorta reminds me of some of the gals I have known in my life! :(

I've seen and/or heard cats meow toward each other. One is for expressing displeasure, usually over territorial disputes, and the other is for the opposite reason while doin' the nasty.

I have too, but it’s totally different sounds that cats have for each other,
unlike the sounds they apply to humans.
But as Edward pointed out, a kitten will “meow” to it’s mother which is the closes
thing that resembles the sound a cat makes to humans.
And a cat will hiss and growl at humans when provoked or frightened.
But I rarely hear grown cats meow to each other like they do to humans.
Sometimes I’ve noticed communication between two cats which are friendly
with each other, although no verbal sound is required.

Greta is very much the same, though I usually get away with having my nose and eyelids licked if I'm not in too deep a sleep. Otherwise she'll rake me with the claws, but as she ears the latex Softpaws covers, this isn't so much an issue. She's very much a creature of habit, gets quite upset and agitated if I'm home late or break the normal routine. Quite a common trait in tabbies especially in my experience.

Why do cats "meow" to humans and not to each other?...
Many so-called experts say cats have evolved over the years into learning how to communicate with humans. Speaking from personal experience, I'm not only inclined to agree but on occasion have had actual conversations with our cats. The trick is that we humans have to learn to interpret and understand their communications; you've clearly learned how to do that. ;)

As for that "human" meow, it does seem to be uniquely designed to get a human's attention but I've seen it used to get another cat's or dog's attention as well.

Can anyone imagine the trouble some of us would be in...if our Dogs or Cats could really speak? LOL!

Of all the cats in my life, Polo is one of the few that will make eye contact for the longest time.
Sometimes we will have a contest to see who blinks first.
I usually lose.

One time I was soaking in the tub. Polo jumped on the ledge and just sat there.

For no reason, soaking in the tub in my birthday suit, I got uncomfortable with Polo staring.
But soon after...the thought of being naked and embarrassed by a cat looking at me
struck me as funny. I laughed so hard which scared Polo away.
