the voices of famous actors? why no modern actors sound like them anymore?

Besides Michael Caine - who is waaaayyyy to old for Jamespowers :) (born 1933) , I think both Clive Owen (born 1964) and Jude Law (born 1973) and Ewan McGregor (born 1971) has very distinctive voices. Besides being great actors that is. And two of them were even born after 1970!!!!

I couldn't tell anyone one of them's voices from an audio lineup Michael Caine maybe. I never heard of most of the others anyway.

McGregor is a Scot. Surely even an American ear can tell his Edinburgh burr apart from a Sassenach..... or do they talk about this mythical "British Accent" over there because they really can't tell the difference between Tim Curry and Sean Connery? ;)

Frankly I suspect that he could not tell Joe Hefferson from (Jos.) Cawthorn from Jack Buchanan from John Gilbert from William Battis. Southern from Marlowe, for that matter!

Perhaps he simply does not care about such minutiae. After all, none of it is of great import at this late date, and "an actor's name is writ in water" after all.

As it has already been said, modern actors do have distinctive voices, we just can't as easily recognize it because we are in the same time period. Also, common accents in film change over time because people tend to mimic other people. For example, most female actors in 70s films have kind of the same accent. The same with every decade. Sure, accents in general society change over time and media plays a role, but go out in the rural parts of America, study, and you will be surprised what you find. Why did the accent of most men in California change from surfer to kind of an effeminate one? That's what I want to know.
