Once upon a time ...


I found a 3-piece, double-breasted herringbone tweed suit from the mid 1930s. The kicker was this: the wide herringbone was jade green and cream. The fabric was thick, but soft and quite drapey. Its buttons were jade green marbled bakelite.

The suit hung unnoticed at an antique mall in North Hollywood. Even though it was a true size 40 R, I passed on it. Several months later, I saw the suit again at the Santa Monica vintage fashion expo. And again, it hung unnoticed. I negotiated on the price and bought it.

Wild Root still remembers that suit, and I imagine that Art Fawcett does, too. I wore it with a 1930s pair of jade green suede, cap-toe shoes. Long story short, I eventually sold the suit: the present owner left it in the company of moths. It ended up a misshapen, moth-eaten mess.

I remembered seeing this one in another thread... A very nice tweed from an eBay UK auction. I thought I would post some of the photos here as they are very apropos.

I was going to bid on that one but I found myself financially embarrassed.

I think that suit in a mustardy-brown Donegal tweed would be my ideal. Still looking.....

I just bought an early 60's Brooks Brothers tweed for the painful price of $195 at Cheap Jack's in NYC. It's a light grey herringbone with a light blue stipe here and there, plus patch pockets. The sleeves and pants are too short (as always) but hopefully that can be fixed. I'll be damed if I lose the cuffs though. Pictures to come!

For those who saw this suit, it's the tear jerker of the Century! Such rare colors and what a beautiful tweed... I even remember the shirt and tie you wore with that Marc, it was a red and cream stripped shirt and a green tie... it still chokes me up to this day!

You don't happen to have any photos of it do you Marc?

This is killing me. Unfortunately both my digital camera and my Richman Bros dated 1943 3-piece brown herringbone tweed suit are sitting at home in New Jersey. (Dont worry, there's tons of protection from moths!) It was most first vintage piece of clothing and I got it for 12 dollars. Size 40, perfect for me, 3-button, high button stance... The pants kept a crease under any circumstances. I'm pretty sure they could stand up on their own...
Anyhow, sorry again for my lack of pictures...

My first vintage suit purchase -- back in 1986! -- was a very blankety and thick wool three-piece from the mid 1930s. Made by "Oxford Clothes" (before it changed its name to "Oxxford"), it had a brown and cream herringbone pattern. A beautifully cut suit.

In the early '90s, I ended up selling it to Crispin Clover (the actor who played Marty McFly's nerdy dad in Back to the Future.)

I purchased a tweed suit on E-bay. The seller claimed it was "vintage bespoke." I'm not too concerned with the date on this one. I just really liked it and it should fit perfectly with some minor hemming of the trousers. It should make for a nice fall and winter suit. Once it arrives I'll get a shot of myself wearing it.

The suit came today and the trousers fit like a charm - a bit long as I expected but it fits well in the legs and waist. I was worried the rise would be too long as I typically do well with somewhat of a shorter rise. The side adjusters are great. The jacket fits decently. The shoulders a little big but the sleeves are perfect. The suit was dated '68 or '69. It still has the original owners name inside the jacket pocket and on the trousers.

One problem - it smells funky. I ran it through my Fabric Refresher 2x and that reduced the scent a bit. I'm going to take it to the dry cleaners this evening. I hope they can do something about the odor.
