The Third Person

THE THIRD PERSON: a politically correct retitling of that Joseph Cotten flick. Joins the ranks of PERSON OF LA MANCHA, and THE THIN PERSON.

.

Surely since all these characters are identified as men - Don Quijote obviously, the thin man obviously, and the third man is identified as a man by the porter - wouldn't that make the original titles politically correct?

the third man would therefore refer to himself in the third person as the third man . . . three times and he can divorce himself.

You could make a show called "The Third Thin Person" with the Olsen twins and Kate Bosworth.

Person of La Mancha with Bette Midler. She can sing and tilt at windmills with gusto.

Person of a Thousand Faces with--who else?--Carol Burnett.

IMO use of the third when referring to oneself has become a stereotypical sign of someone with a hugely inflated ego and self-image. It also tends to be associated with the use of passive voice, which is a usage that drives me nuts.

To quote Bill Murray in Ghostbusters: "That would be Bad, right?"

The person who tried this on for size here at work has a four-syllable name.

Is this true or is my insomniac mind missing the joke?

Because in my current sleep deprived state, this is hilariously funny. lol

It's true, but I won't name names. I don't want to be on the do-not-delivah list.

I suppose one could also talk in the second-person, albeit with great difficulty. It would be like listening to someone narrate a game of Zork...
