Nice Lids.....

Very nice set you have there Feraud....
I just seen a Blue "Flying Cloud" go for $102.50 on OFAS today. I was eye balling it, but that's a bit steep for me. :D Well worth it though.

I saw this peach 'Pesca' Borsalino in an antique shop in Crossville, TN for $15. It is such a peach of a hat that I could not walk off and leave it there, even though it is a 6 7/8ths and 2 sizes too small for me. An italian-english web translator site converted Pesca to peach, but I have seen grey 'Pesca" Borsalinos, so, I'm thinking the Pesca in gold on the sweatband is a reference to the felt finish, which is like a suede finish (peach fuzz?).

I also got Sphinx out of the 'sfinge' on the production tag, but have not gotten any translation of the TA/LUDORA. the 5-digit code indicates 1945, and the liner is very similar to my 1940s Avatar Borsalino. I am presently looking for a local friend with an itty-bitty head that will give this a good home. The only 'wear' is due to improper storage, a few shallow moth/silverfish bites - the sweatband looks like it just came right out of the box new, and not a smudge on the liner either. Shame about those insect bites, but I just had to 'rescue' this hat, it is such a PEACH.

I guess you won't want to divulge the antique shop will ya? I go to Crossville every summer and have not found any hats but western. I don't wear your size:rolleyes:

Indycop - its the one that faces I-40 at the same exit, same side (North) as a surplus army-navy type store, maybe a couple hundred yards between that store and this Antique mall. Finding a hat in an antique store is a bit rare, I find maybe one fur felt out of every 5 stores visited, and of those, about 2 of the 3 are grossly overpriced. not quite sure why I bother to look, other than the desire to break up the driving when I'm alone.

Straight Brim - I like the ocean/blue moon - but I accept that others don't. I've owned two Plymouths that were that color; I thought they were great, but EVERYBODY diss'd me - and derided my taste for 'ugly.' So far, my taste for olive greens and taupe have not elicited the same disdain, so I have 'conformed' to stay away from those more bawdy colors, bowing to social pressure.

Douglas - I am green with envy over the Bertasio - yet another rare gem of Italian style - really nice hat.

I think you mean by the winery?! I am always up there before the big yard sale weekend, I should start looking at that too.

I was hoping this thread would bring out some interesting lids and I wasn't dissapointed. They all look fantastic and out of the ordinary.

Straight brim: welcome to the lounge, and thanks for posting pics of your hats, a great addition.

Hiya,

Here's one of the oddest hats, with the oddest color, and oddest ribbon, that I've ever seen.

It's vintage, at a guess 1950s -- but if you told me it was from the '40s or even '30s, I'd probably believe you. A no-name homburg in a dark wine-red. Probably American-made, to judge from what's left of the lining. The ribbon consists of stripes of black, off-white, bright red, beige, and sage-green.

After working it over on the rack (alias the hat jack), it's almost a 7 5/8. It even fits me, sort of. Lord knows when I'd ever wear it, though. [huh]

Who would have worn such a thing?

Wine-red would make more sense for a women's hat of that era, but the style is definitely that of a man's hat. No trace of perfume lingering in the felt, either.

Something about the color scheme makes me think of Italy, or Romania, or Hungary, but the liner looks like it's from the USA.

One of those mysteries.

Cheers,
Mark
