I studied every posting on this thread and decided there must be something to this Open Road Hat. I do not know what it is but I have one coming that is supposed to be from the 50's. It will be my first wide brim fur felt (over 2 inches).

Received my first Open Road in the mail today I was told it is from the 50's? It has the original sales tag on the box saying it is a SIL BELLY 3XB OPEN ROAD 23/4 with a 2 3/4 brim. Tag inside pictured says 1/4 and & $15 as pictured. It is not gray but a light sand colored. It did not come with a crease in it. I just did a quick smash not knowing anything about making one. All my other hats do it naturally it seems. Seems to be unworn with a few dirt spots which is ok with me. I don't like a new looking hat. Thanks for letting me show it. I will probably be buying some with more X's.

I have a 3x which is a little bit younger than yours and Mr. Dean's, but it's one of my favorites. Congrats on that score.
Just some food for thought on the crease though, if you push the back down a little bit more, you'll get really nice rake and a classic profile:

Thanks everyone. The felt is different than all my other hats even my other Stetsons and really feels good. It also has a mind of it's own when forming it. I will have to learn the steaming method.

I tried steaming for years, because that was what the folks at Meyer the Hatter used. It wasn't until I came here and read about using a spray bottle of distilled water that I had real success in shaping my hats the way I like 'em. Steaming is great, but it never worked well for me to shape crown, brim, or dents in any major way. Your mileage, etc.
