The open crown Western hat?

Easy enough to shorten a tall crown with a steam iron and not a lot of effort.

Duncan OK 1895. Hard to keep the dents out of an open crown.

This Knox Stagecoach is one that I restored. I could have left it open crown after relocking but it was just too much hat with an open crown at 7 inches and a 4.5 brim, including the 1/4 kettle curl.

Reblocked open crown: too much hat to look right and leave open crowned

That last pic of your hat reminds me of this one Slim Pickens wore in this movie with Brando.

I have one of these in the basement. I often think of pulling the band and replacing it, but have not done so yet. Yours looks good.

Thank you buddy! I was lucky to have found enough ribbon for it to replace that ugly woven hat band with!

Thought I should post this here before I decide what I’m going to do with it. This one must have had a deep center crease for a long time; there was a soft spot both front and back a couple of inches down from the top of the crown. With no suitable block to put it on to iron out the crown, I used my Lucky 8 Ball and a lot of steam to smooth it out. Still needs some work on the ghosts.

Helluva white coney western! I kinda like it open to be honest.
I’m curious if contrasting ribbon and binding are original, I would have assumed the bow to have frayed trailing ends.

Thanks, Ross. I kinda like it this way too.

I had the same thoughts and wondered about the frayed bow and I really can’t answer the question but I can speak to the quality of the work which makes me think ‘factory’ made. The ribbon and binding are of the same material. The ribbon measures approximately 1 1/8” and when I wrapped a soft tape over the edge of the brim, the binding measures the same. The binding is blind stitched on the bottom of the brim and is pretty much flawless. There’s no evidence of the stitching up top. I can’t find anything that makes me think it’s not original but can’t say for certain that it is. I’ll leave that to the expert. No. 1 Quality hats came in a lot of configurations. Maybe this is just one we haven’t seen yet.

^^^I like the crown open on you also BB. The crown height works good for you. What did the Lucky Eight Ball say when you asked it?

Thanks, HJ. The Lucky Eight Ball has stopped working. I suspect sabotage. After the Eight Ball advised me to bid high on the hat, I found HER lurking in my cave under the premise of cleaning or some such BS. I can’t prove it but my suspicions are high.

Some times it just takes a while to find a style that fits your personality.
There aint no rules as to how long that may take;)

I like an open crown simply because they fit my odd shaped noggin better than most creases. But nothing wrong with adding a little modern style to them :D All business up front, and a party on the side. Small party may be...but a party none the less
