I can't think of anything individually that stands out at this moment, but I have had a number of compliments on my hats and also my wearing of the hats, usually by other women, once in awhile a man.

The other day I went to the music store to buy a new mouthpiece for my trumpet. I was wearing my Silver Belly OR. I was getting a Schilke 14A4A. I overheard one of the other customers say, 'Man, I bet that fellow's got chops. That mouthpiece and that hat say, "Jazz".'

I only wish he were right! I'm just getting back to playing again after far too many years.

One of the conductors did a double take when he saw me the other day, remarking that he didn't recognize me without a hat (went to work hatless so I could wear, rather than carry, an eBay hat home from work) -- he always has nice things to say about my headgear, the last and best being, "Man, don't leave that hat, 'cause you won't get it back!"

And I was favored with two remarks from a bunch of high school boys -- "Hey, can I wear your hat?," followed immediatley by another's "That's real cool!"

And yes, happily, of late, the compliments are outnumbering the snide comments!

Not a comment as such but... A couple of weeks ago, I was waiting to cross the street near work (Johnson & Wales Unversiy in Providence, RI). Another young man -- early 30s, perhaps -- who always wears a suit approached on the sidewalk. That day he was wearing a nice straw hat, and I had on my Akubra Cattleman [yes, it's big for the city, but it keeps the sun off]. He and I caught each other staring at the other's hat, then exchanged approving nods and smiles.

Today at the bank. "I saw you walking yesterday. You look like you stepped out of cool old movie. We were all watching you."

I hope that was positive. ;)

Can women join in?

"You look like my _______" Insert one: mom/grandma/aunt/cousin. Almost always said with a smile and a request for photograph.

I was in the local Smith's grocery store this afternoon wearing my VS Featherweight and one of the workers stopped me and asked how my day was going. Then he complemented on my hat and said he always liked fedoras. We agreed that fedoras never go out of style for those who understand and appreciate them. A good day for our side. :)

I was wearing a suit, spectators and my dark gray Churchill when my history prof. saw me. He says "everytime I see you like that I get a shiver". I say "in a good way I hope" and he says yeah and smiles.

A couple guys came up and asked why I was so dressed up. I said "no reason really, I just like it" and they thought it was cool. Got a couple of ;) looks from the ladies so that's always a good thing.

Twice now I have had people I know say that I was looking "dapper" today. Now that's a word one doesn't hear too often these days, but a compliment just the same.

I seem to get that one quite a lot - it's the cravats and the hats that seem to do it. Oh, and the spectators. I like it. Mostly the people who actually comment are older people - either older folks who would remember their parents dressing like that, or folks ten years or more older than me. Folks my own age are less likely to comment directly - at least straight boys. For whatever social reason, gay men and straight women in my generation are the most likely to comment / compliment someone they don't know. a lot of girls don't say anythin,g but they do smile. There's definitely something to this - I don't get looked at twice if i don't go out dressed proper. :)

After a year of wearing proper hats, I have yet to receive a negative comment.

On the metro this morning I had an older gentleman ask about the hat.

I had my topper in my hands. He looked at me, came across the car and said "you don't see much of those anymore. You don't happen to play tennis? I need a partner to beat my son this afternoon."

As I don't indeed play tennis, I declined. He smiled and said "Great lid, have a good day." and got off at the next stop.

The metro in DC can be such a strange place.

How did you happen to be wearing a top hat this morning - were you in morning dress, or do you wear a top hat more regularly?

The best story I ever heard about top hats I was told by a guy I was on set with a few years ago. UK members may have heard of a daytime soap called Doctors (not to be confused with the older, Australian Young Doctors). A friend of mine used to be their wardrobe mistress, and so when the call came out for extras who could appear as guests at a "goth wedding" in one episode and provide their own costumes.... Chatting to the guy playing the priest, it turned out he earned much of his living as a birthday party clown. He got chatting to some of us because of the costumes - turns out back in the 80s, his son had been one of the original goths. One day, new neighbours moved into the street, and as another neighbour was giving them the lowdown on who lived where, this vampyric vision glided into view in quasi Victorian costume, long coat, and a slightly battered top hat which sat at a crooked angle. "Who's that?" asked the new neighbour, slightly taken aback. "Oh," came the reply, "that's the clown's son." lol Funniest hat story I've ever heard!

sorry it was a fedora. My grandfather always called a hat a topper and it just sort of caught in my head all these years. He also called ball caps toppers

Just a gray scala fedora that is a little too large for me.

I'd LOVE to have seen the look on the new neighbor's face! :eusa_clap

Last Sunday my wife and I entered a restaurant. As we approached the hostest station one young lady who worked there said "Oh, I love your hat!" (Dobbs straw) and immediately the young lady next to her said "I love the shirt!" (Polo shirt with Mickey Mouse insignia)

Rhonda teased me as we left about having young women shamelessly flirting with me while she was tight there. :p

Cheers,
Tom

Tom, Some of that comes with the age factor. Get ready for the day when young, good looking women start opening doors for you! Smile and enjoy it. :)

Ah, with you now. No probs. Topper, lid.... makes sense to me. All hats are "top" hats in the sense they top off an outfit, eh? ;) Soundsl ike a great hat, though. Short of something to wear with tails, it's hard to bee a good snap brim fedora for all occasions. :)

I'd pay money to! lol If ever I write a sitcom, that story will be incorporated into it. It's already something I plan to have in my standup routine, if and when that happens! :D

Gah, why is it always the attached guys who get all the attention, meanwhile single guys like me..... lol
