The Next World War

What's worse to see is that this is a good topic and something to be concerned about but because of the state of affairs the real threat might get lost in everyone's arguing back and forth between the Democrats and the Republicans. And in the event that something does happen, there is so much mistrust even in our own country that people either won't take it seriously or will be so partisan that they will be unwilling to try to work toward a reasonable answer.:(

I really doubt we'll have anything to worry about....look at what happened on 9/11....the country pulled together, people were actually polite to everyone else for a whole month...naw, in times of crises, us Americans do fine. As far as another WW111....doubt it. This war with Iraq will probably last another year then die off. Germ or biological warfare is the creepy stuff....who knows what some people got up their sleeve. But again, I doubt we'll ever see any of that happen...I think there's people in the media that like to get people all hyped up and scared...we're safe

Well (and I'm not trying to bash my generation, though they do worry me) we're putting on the pounds like crazy. I don't think I could expect any guy I know to be able to take basic training as they are right now (heck, even me, but I have asthma so I'm pretty much exempt from active duty. Gee whiz would I love to see the Waves make a come back though. I'd be there in a heartbeat!) Well, maybe a few guys, but definitely not the majority. But our collective weight problem does worry me.

Doesn't worry me nearly as much. Sure, I know some guys my age (22) who could stand to lose some pounds but hardly any are actually obese. They'd lose it in Basic fast enough. And most of the heavy-looking guys are 6'2"+ which is utterly different from WWII stats. We're taller and not half-starved and most have seen a doctor or a dentist when they need to.

The average American in our age-group has better marksmanship and reflexes, compared to people in third world countries, too; one theory is we should be thanking videogames.

I would definitely sign up if something went down, and I think this generation is not nearly as bad off as some think.

Again, we'll come together if WWIII hits us.

I think that party politics come to play in this thread. After all, party politics may have a hand in bringing World War III about.

I just want to clarify that my post wasn't a rant against anyone's posts, it was moreso out of frustration over the general climate of things in day to day life. That people refuse vehemently to look past party lines was something seen even during WWII.

A fantastic example would be the two branches of the Roosevelt family. The Oyster Bay branch for the most part (excluding Eleanor who had defected to the Hyde Park side along with her brother, and immediate family members) vehemently disapproved of FDR's handling of the war. They were still willing to serve in the military (TR Jr. and Kermit [I'm not sure about Archie who did serve in WWI] served in both WWI and WWII and each died on active duty, though Kermit's death was a suicide) but the family for the most part were unwilling to even visit the White House while he was in office. I think Alice did visit once or twice but she and Eleanor had been on ice for quite some time (contrary to popular myth they were quite close as children and into early adulthood. It was Franklin's rivalry with Ted Jr. that drove them apart when each took a side and never looked back.)

Well, the Roosevelts were awfully competitive and somewhat weird, probably thanks to all that blue-blood inbreeding. (Cousins marrying cousins? No thanks!)
lol lol your too funny....anyways, I've read the trailer for V for Vendetta...if you see it you'll have to tell us how it was....the story line sounded weird.

Well technically FDR and ER were only distant cousins, it was the name that was important. They only had one ancestor in common and that was about the seventeen hundreds or so. It wasn't quite as drastic as it may seem.:)

Lena, I think you're at the top of my list of people with whom I'd love to have a brain-picking lunch. I have a shelf of Rooseveltian biographies - they're an endlessly fascinating family. They make the Kennedy's seem like dullards, especially when one begins totting up real accomplishments.

Though this is terribly off-topic of me, I would love to see those Roosevelt books of yours. I've just started to get into their family within the past year (but don't send any suggestions for Collier-Horowitz books my way, they're awful) and it's been a lot of fun. I plan to pick up the FDR biography by Conrad Black as soon as I can. As for the Kennedys, I'm a huge fan and have been reading about them extensively since November, 2003. I have literally a few thousand pictures of the Kennedys but only maybe two hundred or so Roosevelt pictures in my Photobucket. I think my personal tastes lean toward Hyde Park but I admire the Oyster Bay clan a great deal.

Not sure about WWIII

but we've certainly entered a shocking new phase of warfare in the Western world with terrorism. Once, it was something we only saw happening in the Middle East from the the comfort of our armchairs.

So perhaps WWIII is not the conventional war we believe it will be, but it is already here, fermenting in our own back yards, unseen, unheard, until it erupts in violence as has happened in New York, London, and, closer still to my heart and home, Bali.
