The meaning of etiquette!

Etiquette, a word that has affected immensely on what I wear and how I wear it. I also know for a fact that I'm not the only one. Some of us follow strictly vintage etiquette and others swear by the norms of the modern world. Others on the other hand don't care about such nonsense that limits their freedom to do as they please.

I haven't gotten any etiquette books concerning the clothing. Some of my books have the most basic rules of how to wear a suit, but I'm yet to encounter a book that goes deeper into ascots, cravats, morning dresses, hats and such(getting a hold of these books in Finland is almost impossibility). My behaviour is mostly a collection of rules that I have gathered throughout the internet. Mostly I have picked the ones that makes most sense and others because I like dressing like a gentleman.

Other day, however, I came to wonder what is the boundary of etiquette. Is it restricted by a national, continental or global boundaries. For example a suit. It is in Finland socially contemptible to wear a good old combination of suit, dress shirt and a tie just for the heck of it. Does this mean that etiquette in Finland have changed since etiquette is "-a code of behavior that delineates expectations for social behavior according to contemporary conventional norms within a society, social class, or group." If no, does etiquette matter at all if there is only a handful of people whom know anything about it. Can, or rather should I go grocery shopping wearing a formal ascot and a black suit if no one know the etiquette of these garments? Many might judge me for dressing too formally without any kinda knowledge of etiquette and only related to poorly dressed people in general.

I like to keep etiquette alive the best I can since it mostly makes sense and I'm old-fashioned that way. I also hope that the art of the gentlemen will not be lost since it represents fundamental values that seem to be mostly forgotten in todays society.

How do you see etiquette? Do we even need it in the modern world where no one knows of it?

PS:I did search for etiquette posts but came across none that fitted my...criterion.

That's really it in a nutshell. Who's etiquette? I try to "fit in" in as much as I don't want to be offensive or disrespectful. But as to "who's rules" to follow? Mine. Just common sense as the world is too heterogeneous.

I think you should always try to dress in a way that is broadly consistent with the particular social environment you find yourself in, and with your own circle of friends/colleagues/family, otherwise you may cut a rather eccentric and lonely figure (but then again, that in itself may not be such a bad thing). Sometimes, in particular circumstances - say weddings, formal dinners, some sporting activities and certain business situations, there are objectively 'correct' (and 'incorrect') ways to dress, and it is worthwhile taking the trouble to do so correctly, but obviously there are differing norms here, both internationally and socially.

I actually have a huge Emily Post book for this. It was my grandmothers.
It's been taken to work where there was a question or two regarding weddings and funerals (proper attire).
This practice has certainly been lost through the ages, and I'm not just talking about which fork to use (I use the biggest one because you get more food that way :D).

Etiquette always is, whether people know about it or not. It's a label to define generally expected behavior, and wherever I go, I usually know what to expect.. It just changes over time. It's certainly not what it used to be, but they said that when it was what it used to be, so really, personal preference dictates how far back to look, if at all, for the right way.

I thought nowadays, etiquette was whenever you don't wear a hoodie, sport shoes or shorts. Casual Friday today is full etiquette. A tuxedo is a disguise.

Well, once ZuckerShmuck met with bankers wearing such gear, the whole thing was out the window. The billionaire techies have dropped the bar for clothing. Well, them and hipsters lol

I'm just now getting to this thread -- if you're really interested in this kind of book, why don't you take a look at Amazon? You can get almost anything there, and if you have an E-reader, you can get in INSTANTLY.
