I am a practicing lawyer in Middle Tennessee. I have been practicing for 26 years June 3rd, first in Indiana and now in Tennessee. I thought it might be simply advancing age, but I must say the standards of dress and decorum in court have dropped dramatically over my career. I still wear a suit every day, with the attendant and appropriate hat, but there are many lawyers who are disgraceful, with defendants and other litigants showing up in Court even more disgraceful.

It is part of the dreadful casualization of our overall society. I grew up in Indianapolis and am a big race fan. I love the old pictures of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway wear men wore suits, ties and hats to races. I'm not sure I'd like to go back that far, but it certainly shows the change in the way we look at going out in public.

Your assumed act of grace was very condescending.

I have been on FL since before July 2006 under another name. I have no idea why you seem to have a problem with me. I can only think it is due to the religion thread.
You asked a ? about dress for lawyers. I joined in the conversation with my opinions. I was also replying to Harp. Maybe you could ask him what he meant by gunslinger. Big Dog is a term. A whole chain of stores was named after it. It could basically mean anything.
I know condescending and this ain't it. How you can read my mind I have no idea either.
You stay on your end and I will stay on mine.

It is a matter of hiring the best help one can find for a legal issue. Period. Looks and the package as a whole do matter.
One doesn't want to hire a plumber that shows up in a raggedy truck looking horrible, or roofer, or teacher of your children. I cannot even believe this needs explanation at all.
I guess if someone wants to hire an unkempt lawyers they have a right to.
Others also have the right to expect more.

If I'm paying upwards of $200 an hour for legal services, I want someone who looks like a high-priced lawyer, not a high-priced hooker.

I've got a solution for both lawyers and law students: traditional black robes.

Those are for judges.

are you suggesting you cannot dress nice, be a big dog, run with the big dogs and not have these or execute your duties properly?

I do not mean any offense ..............

I am saying take on puppies if you are a Big Dog. Mentor those who come after you. While I still may be idealistic, I think that situations which include, but are not limited to: the "glass ceiling", "old boy network" can and should be eliminated. Like I said it is an ideal, however, it requires healthy competition not exclusion. The phrase "running with the Big Dogs" historically connotes that very type of exclusion. [huh]

I am sorry but I think the internet just flat messes conversation up sometimes. This whole conversation is sort of funny to me as if you knew who my lawyer was. He is a champion of the little guy. I also think those exclusions are going by the wayside. Like I said before. This year is like the end of the party when the lights go on brightly after a very long party.
I do not like any pompous anyone but being assured of yourself in a court room and successful will take more than a suit no matter how much it cost.
A well rounded gentleman must know how to speak to all people. Kings and common folk.
------------------------------------------------------------Rudyard Kipling

If

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!
