The Killing.

The recent Kentucky Derby thread had me thinking about horses and film. The Killing directed by Stanley Kubrick comes to mind.

Johnny Clay (Sterling Hayden) leads a group of men in a “fool proof” race track robbery. Clay has plotted every detail of the heist down to the minute, including the killing of the favorite racehorse as a distraction. When the wife of one of the bandits overhears the robbery plans she goes to her boyfriend with the information. Things go bad for the gang when greed comes into play.

Those who like Tarantino’s non-linear style of storytelling in films like Pulp Fiction & Reservoir Dogs will appreciate Kubrick’s film. Scenes begin with a voiceover describing a prior date and time. The story is lean, mean and all around great!

Check it out if you have an opportunity.

I second that!

I won't ruin it here, but the last line in the film uttered by Sterling Hayden is a classic, and sorta sums up life in general at times. But here's a sample from earlier in the film:

Johnny Clay: A friend of mine will be stopping by tomorrow to drop something off for me. He's a cop.
Joe: A cop? That's a funny kind of a friend.
Johnny Clay: Well, he's a funny kind of a cop.

(And $50 bucks to anyone who can understand "Maurice" without using the subtitles feature!)

Very good scenery, on location shots also

I have this on on tape. It is a great movie, and well filmed. There are some flaws...ie, the mic boom's shadow can clearly be seen outside the motel driveway scene. The ending is also "not typical"...and Elisha Cook is good in his role also.....

This is a must see, often forgotten Noir/Crime classic.

An excellent film from top to bottom. I'm not a big Kubrick fan but I've always enjoyed this one. I would also highly recommend the similarly themed French film Rififi, released around the same time as the Killing.

Yep, poor Elisha Cook. Sherry really treats him like garbage. :eusa_doh:

Rififi is a great one! A similar ending from what I remember?

Yes indeed ! Definately a 'must see' - the DVD has 67 mins of special features including an interview with director Jules Dassin. If you don't have a copy then put it on your shopping list

NICE ONE !!

I bought a copy of 'The Killing' - excellent, I enjoyed it a lot. I hadn't seen this film before and probably wouldn't have heard of it but for 'The Lounge' so thanks to you all. Actually, a list of suggestions for 'must see' films of this sort/genre would be much appreciated. I already have : Thieves like us - The Natural - The Untouchables - Rififi - Once upon a time in America - Goodfellas - The Godfather trilogy - O Brother Where Art Thou -

Colin:)
