I may have to see this just to get new insight. I never could understand why a strong-willed guy like Jay Gatsby would expend so much effort to win the shallow heart of a veritable human vacuum like Daisy.

I'm now kind of wishing someone would do a remake of Tender is the Night. I actually like that book better than Gatsby (heresy). Possibly because I wasn't forced to read it in 10th grade English class.

I can see that, now that you showed that picture, but it still doesn't look quite right to me.
That's also one more thing they messed up as far as the time line then....

Why is that? The photos of Clara Bow were taken in 1928; The Great Gatsby was written in 1925 and the story takes place in the 1920's so the time line is still intact as far as the hairdo goes (well, at least the original).

The story takes place in the summer of 1922 in the novel. It's not THAT big of a deal [huh]

I guess my issue is that movie people always seem to lump an entire decade together. A bad example, but the only one I can think of right now, would be The Wedding Singer.

Oh yes.

Movie people could mix 20's with 50's and even the 70's - and have no second thoughts about it (see 'The Sting'). 1921 looked quite different from 1929 and the transition from one decade to the next is usually rather smooth.

Come to think of it: If I look at some German TV news reels from, say 1992 or 1993, they still look so incredibly 80's that it makes me wince... :eeek:

The tousled curly bob was also worn in 1922...in terms of colour and specific style it's a clear reference to Bow, but you can see it, for example, in some of Alla Nazimova's styles. Curls would be piled up and might be worn with either a day or evening bandeau. I'm not entirely as keen on the scarf-as-bandeau...it did exist, but wasn't quote as common, particularly earlier in the decade. I do like the idea of using a curly bob, though, as it gives a better idea of the diversity of hairstyles in the 1920s aside from dutch dolls and marcel waves.

Well I'm certainly not any kind of expert on the 20s (not my decade) and I know you are from reading your previous posts (and avatar of course) ..... but I have to ask..... Would a women that's married to a gas station owner be one to have the latest style? I know she was a kept woman, but it seems a little odd. This is just out of curiosity.....

Quite possibly she would, as she was nothing if not aspirational! I can see her picking it up out of magazines or from her trip into Manhattan. It wasn't particularly high-style...then as now, women with different textured hair had to find different styles to suit it, and you would have seen it on the streets. The bandeau, particularly the evening bandeau, is more a first-half of the decade hangover from the teens (although it did persist into the second half, it was less common). We see it a fair bit with those whose hair tended to curl naturally - it would be piled up on top and a bandeau would go around the brow or a bit higher, as worn here. Bow's looks a bit teased to work with her hair texture, as does Isla...those who didn't have naturally curly hair sought to imitate the style. By 1922, the bob was pretty well established - even if Hollywood was a teeny bit slower to take it up and there were still quite a few ringlettes to be seen on screen.
