A friend of mine asked my why I come to the Fedora Lounge and I told him that I like hats, music from the golden age and beings a historian, certain aspects of different eras.

He then asked me if The Fedora Lounge was a social network for people who are interested in the Golden Era. I have no idea. Can anybody help answer this question?

Not in the sense that Facebook or LinkedIn is.

Let me put it this way: my work system totally blocks access to all "social networking" sites like Facebook (and photo-hosting sites, streaming media like YouTube and radio simulcasts, and lots of other fun stuff)... but I have no problem accessing the Fedora Lounge over it!

Facebook and the like are clearly wide open external social networking entities that I do realize. I agree with you there.

The person's point of view was that users can upload a picture of themselves, create their 'profile' and can often be "friends" with other users; create a profile for themselves and provide an exchange of information, opportunities, and ideas. Even create events.

Well, people on here meet up in real life so, yes. Though I'd say its primarily an information sharing resource.

I don't come here for information much. I come here for social interaction with often like minded people who share certain interests, and aree pretty cool conversationalists, no matter what the subject. I would call it aa social networking site for those who choose to use it that way, be it conversation, orr even meeting up in real life. For those that just like to read, it is more of an info site.

Mainly, you have to clearly define your word to decide weather this is it or not. It is what it is, and the definition can only try to descrivbe the reality of what it is.

I do like the diversity this place brings to my life. I am always a bit curious who is behind the names and personalities really though. Interesting but I have always had a big curiosity about life and people my whole life.
I still think 75% of why we think the way we do boils down to locality though.
This place has cemented that for me. lol

I would call the FL a social network. It's true that it isn't quite the same social network that Myspace or Facebook is, but I believe that any online site which links people through common interests or background can be a social network. I have certainly met a few friends online here whom I talk to on instant messengers off of the FL. I'm sure that others here have made similar connections.

Of course, it is. Scion's right on the button. But as Mike says, it works on the technology of a previous era.

It would be no less an information-sharing forum if it adopted a new look. And it would be just as social.

This is rather close to my own thoughts.

Well, the FL for me is just this, a forum.
Here you are not coming to add friends, you don't get stupid quizes or applications requests.

We are just a bunch of good old style people that likes to share their opinions, knowledge and points of view over a same passion, the Golden Era.
That we do meet people here, yes, of course, this is a forum, but sure we are not here to collect friends and let the world know how we are doing in a "twittered" way.
Just my two cents.

That's why travel is imperative to the opening of the mind.

Think of this as an on line bar in which people come and go and have conversations for fun or to share information. Is a bar a social networking place? Depends on how you define it.

Social Networking I would argue has been around since the 90s.

First there where groups like Yahoo Groups, then came forum's which FL is one, then came networking sites (facebook etc).

But they all do the same thing, just the info presented in a different format.

yes or cementing what we think in the first place.lol

I do think going to Europe and getting the feel of the news there and all did make me understand much more about their angst about what goes on in America. I can then understand a bit why people that come to this board have the views they do from other places then America. Most definitely a product of where they come from.
