The Dobbs Diner...

There were a few posts in this thread a while ago discussing Dobbs hats made under license (can't find them now but they're in here somewhere). This is such a hat. Dobbs Twenty, made in Italy under license. Overwelt edge (I took that out to relieve the hat of its stingy-ness), lined with onion-skin covering of the crown patch. Strange thing about this hat is that the ribbon and shark-gill bow are not made of grosgrain, but some other material. The label doesn't give anything away about who the maker (and holder of the license) was. Nice felt though and well made all around. Dobbs hats are extremely rare in Europe. This is the only one I have seen so far.

What a joy to see this unicorn. I knew Stetson was made under license in Europe, not the other brands. I suppose many names show up in license manufacture. Would be a great study/search here in the archives of the Fedora Lounge. That shark's gill bow treatment is fantastic. I embrace the stingyness of this era of hats, kind of like the way they look. You never cease to amaze me my friend.

Redfokker, thanks. The stingy brims aren't my preferred style, but I dug this one up from a bin in a vintage clothing store in Amsterdam. Because Dobbs hats are so rare here and because it had that shark gill bow I took it with me (not a hard decision at 15 euro). I took out the overwelt and ironed the brim and it blossomed into a proud fedora I wear regularly.

Dobbs Twenty, made in Italy under license.
Dobbs and Knox were made in italy in the Panizza historical factory from 1957 when they had the license to made these two US brands.
I have three Dobbs-Panizza in my collection: a Thirty in grey a Golden Coach in brown and a stingy, don't remember the name, in black

Daniele, those look great on you. I didn't know Panizza made them; good to know. Earlier I posted that Dobbs hats are quite rare over here, but yesterday I found three of them in a vintage clothing store. All of them stingy brims and smaller sizes (one longhair by the way), but still...

The following is a post I made under "new hats" which I thought I should duplicate here....would appreciate any info that can be provided.....,would love to find an ad for this hat.......it appears to be a sort of Stetson "Three Way" or "Whippet" clone.
Here is a Dobbs "Daskin" I just picked up. Nice rich brown, 2 inch very dark brown ribbon, with a sort of dark olive bound edge 2 1/2 inch brim. Binding is very interesting....1/2 inch under the brim, little over a 1/4 inch on the upper brim. Brim is really heavily flanged.....2 inch sweat......about 5 1/2 open crown......fits great!!!!!!
I am thinking late 50's or early 60's???
Thanks,
M
