The new ribbon and binding would have been great on a lot of other felt colors. It seems like the felt has some warm undertones, and the ribbon some cold. Fading of dark and yellowing of light ribbon is very common (close to a rule) with vintage hats, so it's hard to tell the original color - but I agree that Optimo's choise could have been a lot better.

Dobbs 5th Ave Straw Flat Crown

Beautiful Hat Garrett. Where did you find it at?

Here's a Dobbs straw I guess you could call it a Porkpie with a flat crown. 2" brim and a 4" crown wrapped in a wide 2 1/2" gold ribbon. The straw weave is kind of like a silver with blue tones. The color on top of the hat may be faded since the underside of the hat shows more of a blue tone.

Dobbs Gay Prince

Newer model Gay Prince. 2 1/4" brim and 5 1/4" crown depth as measured since there is no depth on the tag. The felt has a very soft suede like feel to it.

Dobbs Fifth Ave Long Hair (Dick Tracy)

This long haired yellow Dobbs just arrived today. You can vaguely make out the Dobbs Logo through the yellowed oilskin of the liner. I was tempted to remove the oilskin which is cracking in a couple of places to expose the logo but I decided to leave as is for now. I think the exposed logo would look more attractive then the current state of the oilskin. Maybe someone here has some thoughts about removing the oilskin. It's missing the original ribbon. It came with a rather unattractive bandana wrapped around the crown that was just held down by a safety pin so I removed it. I'm pretty sure the leather sweatband isn't original as there are no markings on it and the leather doesn't feel like any Dobbs sweatband I've ever felt. The seam of the sweatband is taped so I would think the sweatband was replaced long ago but for all I know it could be a relatively new replacement. There are no tags behind the sweatband that would provide some additional information about the hat. If I really strain my eyes I can see some of the detail of the Dobbs logo so I'll try to look for a similar example to post. It really has quite a bit of potential, just needs cleaned and a new ribbon. I was thinking this might be from the mid to late 30s to the early 40s. It would be helpful to know so I can find a ribbon similar to the original. It has a 2 6/8" brim with a felted welt edge and the crown is approx 5 6/8" (open). I haven't seen too many hats in this color which looks like a golden yellow to me. I know Dick Tracy wore a yellow fedora but I don't know if it was a long hair! I think this was $25.00 well spent.

I found a Dobbs on this thread that looks like this one except it has a ribbon with a sharks gill bow.
