Back in the early 20th century, people took cod liver oil for vitamins A and D:

We were given cod liver oil at school back in the fifties. It was gross. I'm not a pill popper, if I don't get enough D3 from sunlight I'm sure that our twice weekly fish intake will supplement the deficiency. Cod, salmon, mackerel, are all a rich source of D3 and if you are feeling flush, so is caviar.

Germany is on a good way! Our corrupt government, pharma and big-media, here, cannot deny the general lack of vitamin D, anymore! :)

The breakthrough was in 2016, because of the multiple-sclerosis-research and practical medicine, too.

Today, they know, that the classic cod-liver oil was too rich on vitamin-D. Some say 10.000 IU on the spoon. On kids! Surely, they combated Osteomalacia, but this classic thing is just outdated. It worked, because it was the efficient vitamin D3, instead of D2.

Today, they know that D2 is nearly useless. Bad exploitable.

After cod-liver oil, fruit-flavoured cod-liver oil came in West-Germany. Then Sanostol, until the danger of too much vitamin A was finally known.

I’ve been playing tennis all my life where for the most part the Sun
is very intense most of the year.

I’ve noticed that some fair-skinned folks who are much younger than me
yet their skin is very worn or dry with wrinkles. Sometimes they ask me
what am I doing that I don’t wrinkle. I tell them I don’t really have an
expert reason. I can withstand the heat in a match where the average
temperature is 100º or higher much better than some of my opponents.

But on the other hand, I cannot withstand cold weather very well.

Might also be a genetic thing too.... has your family been in a hot climate part of the world for several generations?

No lack of vit D for her but she's about ready to be made into handbags. :rolleyes:

UGh, my mother tried to get us on the stuff back in the 90s. Couldn't swallow it - even the supposedly flavourless capsules repeated on me. Doesn't help that anything that tastes like fish triggers my gag reflex..... My dad, though, loves it. He'd drink it out of the bottle (and does!). He crunches the capsules. Back around 97, we had a kitten who loved them to - dad used to give him the odd capsule. KItten would get it in his mouth, puncture it, then sit and suck it for hours, before eventually spitting out the empty capsule. Always reminded of him whenever I see them on sale now!

Lard, too, but I think the piggies have to be raised on a pasture in the sunshine.

After years of experimenting on how to prepare a certain bread like my
grandmother used to make.
I found that "lard” was the missing ingredient.
Also the amount of time spent kneading the dough was very important.

I enjoyed it, but ate it everyday.
I gained weight fast and had to stop making it. :(

Sometime in 2018, the VITamin D and Omega-three triAL (VITAL) will conclude its first part and provide some evidence to indicate whether vitamin D supplementation at a level of 2000 IU/day with or without omega-3 fatty acids has specific CVD effects. This large study has enrolled about 25,000 healthy, middle-aged American adults. It has also been structured to gauge long-term effects. VITAL is expected to augment the wealth of information that we possess concerning vitamin D supplementation for bone health.

My vitamin D blood-level from 01.September:

56,3 nanogram/milliliter. Absolutely fine!

My blood-calcium is fine, too! :)

PS:
Since today, I got a new doctor and she is a younger, modern doctor on actual knowledge (!) and in her opinion, even 70 nanogram are recommendable.
And she is surely right, because the knowledge is similar to mine. :)

Last week, I visited the laboratory to get my vitamine D and calcium checked, again.

Today, I got the results and my vitamine D was already on 70 nanogram/milliliter (!), which is of course still in the optimal range (30-96 ng/ml). But, it could surely already be seen as "borderline", like the laboratory does, too. And there is no need to get higher, naturally. My calcium level was still perfect.

So, I know where I stand, again. And now, I will go further with my actual daily 1.000 IU instead of my longtime 2.000 IU. There is no need to risk anything. And in maybe six months, we will see again. Life's good. :)

I've been told that for years. God forbid you get it naturally these days. SPF 1000 and all. I take sunshine in a pill too. I am pretty sure every human alive is short on the amount of every vitamins. Not to mention the "new standard" in what is good levels of cholesterol, sugar, etc. I was told my sugar was borderline last year. I visited my girlfriend in Belgium in November. Her Mom is a doctor. She drew blood and ran all panels (she is such a sweet woman). She said, everything is 100% with you. Goes to show you how crazy America has gone with "what's acceptable" healthwise.

I think, that's absolutely ok. As far as I know, the general recommendation of 1.000 to 2.000 IU daily didn't change. But, there is of course no need to start with 2.000 IU daily. I started with the classic 1.000 IU daily, back then in 2016 and even that low basic dosage helped me very well and my body condition was fully back after some months! I never forgot that. And now, I changed back again from 2.000 to classic 1.000 IU. No need to risk anything. :)

Results from the VITAL-Study!


-no significant effects/reductions on cardiovascular diseases and cancer
-no hypercalcemia from the daily Vitamine D3 intake!! :)
-no urgent need to stop your daily intake of supplements
