First outing for a brand new Monsivais & Co newsboy, the “National” model in a very nice cotton gingham. Fit is a little looser than I like but it doesn’t slid down my noggin or fall off so it’s all good. Maybe because they call it the National but I feel the need to wear it to a baseball game.

Last year I bought a newsboy cap from the Polish hat maker, Sterkowski. I now own five of these first-rate gems including two Harris Tweeds, two linens, and a limited edition cotton. You can find their store on Amazon, but I purchased directly from Sterkowski’s website. There is no sales tax when delivered to the U.S. The shipping charge is reasonable and immediate. Around a 2-week trip to beautiful Laughlin, Nevada. I normally wear size 7⅛ and their 52cm fits me perfectly. The pictures on their website are much better than anything I can load. No disappointments! https://sterkowski.com/

In recent years I've purchased five or six caps from Sterkowski, and haven't been disappointed yet. Their caps, for me, are comfortable and not hard on the eyes.

Hi everyone! I recently purchased this newsboy cap on Poshmark. Can anyone help with dating this cap? It is the United Hatters, Cap, and Millinery Workers union label so I know it would be between 1934 and 1983. It also has both numeric range, and letter sizing. Also, the cap has no brand logo, just a plain black liner with what looks like a rather wide sweatband. Regarding which class wore what, I've been looking for a real true "worker's" cap. Something along the lines of what those "Lunch Atop A Skyscraper" fellows wore. Were these rather plain caps that don't appear to be attached to any specific company worn more by the working class who may not have been able to afford a name brand hat or cap? Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: Also, just want to say if my second to last sentence comes across as insulting that is not my intent. When I talk about the working class not being able to afford name brand hats or caps I'm not trying to come across as insulting. I just have an understanding that back in the day there was a class distinction between who wore hats and who wore caps to their jobs. Businessmen, lawyers, bankers, etc. all would have worn a hat, whether a fedora, homburg, derby, top hat, whatever. The working class, and maybe there's a better term to use so help me out if there is, would have gone with caps, newsboys, flat caps, watchmen caps or beanies, all of those. And that distinction in my mind led me to the idea that the working class probably weren't going to work on a girder wearing a nice Stetson or something name brand.

just an fyi, free international shipping thru jan 17th
Sterkowski sizing has been inconsistent for me.

One example was with 2 caps, same models, but different colors ...one fits perfectly and the other won't go on my head.

So, I tend to purchase Sterkowski caps through Amazon...same free shipping, but returns are easier and faster through Amazon.

Going by the sweatband, liner and the size of the button I would say 1980s. The older 1920s thru 1940s caps had either a full or partial leather sweatband and a small 1/2" button on top. Also all of the ones I have had in the past had a company logo on the liner and a small size tag sticker on the sweatband.

Hello,

I am looking for a quality old school 100% tweed wool bakers or preferably newsboy cap. I would like it to have a leather sweatband, be unlined or, if it has to be lined, at least with natural materials and have a snap button attached to the crown. What are your recommendations, especially European makers?

The best of the best is Jonathan Cordova, He's on Etsy and Instagram. Jonathan will do custom jobs. He's in Florida.
Then there is Simonds Caps, on Etsy. Very accomodating, He will work with you. Simonds is in North Carolina
Well Dressed Head on Etsy, Australia.
Monsivais & Co, He has a website. He's In Southern California

Hope this helps.

Helps a lot, forget to say I am from Europe, so I would prefer makers from the old continent.

Sterkowski has some great reviews. But I believe that his sweatbands are not leather.
There is also a lady in France on ebay that has some cool caps, I can't remember the name though... mamie blue or something like that. I don't think that she has leather sweats either.
Thomas Farthing in the UK has some real BEAUTIES.
I don't know of any custom cap makers in Europe.

Thomas Farthing is absolutely on my list, it's just that every 61cm was already sold, unfortunately :(. Sterkowski has some good and some bad reviews, so I'm not entirely convinced of their quality? What about some good quality Irish makers, Donegal tweeds and such, what you think gentleman?
