REFURB

About eight or nine posts back on this thread is my most recent Open Road. It's a late sixties/early seventies model ( the sorta "diamond" pattern liner - I think I'm dating it correctly... ) in a 4X. It is considerably heavier that my 3X, and I can't decide whether or not that's a good thing. Good, I suppose, in that it's different from the earlier make 3X that I have ( man, that's a great hat ), so I don't have two of the exact same hat. But seriously: dang it's chunky. A bit more of what you think of as a "cowboy" hat.
Well, I finally had it washed and reblocked:

As you can see, I haven't yet replaced the liner, nor have I decided exactly what I'm gonna do on that front. The body is in really good shape, and the ribbon is pretty good, too. However, my older 3X is immaculate ( as in it doesn't even have any permanant creases ), and I already have something of a beater in my Resistol. Soooooo... this hat is stuck in "no man's ( head ) land" right now.
I'm debating on whether I should let it go, or do something a bit different; something I wouldn't ordinarily do. I'm sporting the diamond in my Camp Draft, the 3X does what I tell it, and the Resistol is also a diamond. I was thinking about doing a simple center dent on this one, but as you can see in the picks, the block has a bit of taper, which I fear wil translate to even more taper once creased - especially considering the thicker felt.
Anyone got any suggestions? Pics of something really different they've done with an OR or clone? I'd appreciate whatever you got.

I was in the same position you are now & decided to let my hat go to a place it would get more head-time, have done that more than once. Somebody else could give the hat the use it needed. I'm not into having them just to have them in a box.

Well, with the arrival of my Akubra Camp Draft I guess that I'm in. It's my first non-western thin ribboned hat and I imagine there will be more in the future.

And that somebody else is grateful. The Stetson 3XXX you passed along is probably my favorite hat, even though I expected it to be a beater/fishing hat. It gets a lot of head time. Unfortunately, it is also triggered the obsession that infects many others on this forum. But I'm not sorry. Gotta run now and check Ebay for any new listings.

My lovely Stetson Open Road, my everyday hat.

and the best part, I bought it for $15!!!

Still needs steam and work to get the crease where I want it. as you can see it's a great hat for adventure.

Nice location shot. Where was this taken?

Hanging Rock State Park, NC. A nice gem of a park, two waterfalls, lots of cliffs, good views, etc.

Bloodandmood, that is a nice OR and what a great deal. Looks like you might have something special in the tweed case too. :eusa_clap :)

Nothing special, just an ordinary guitar.

With all the latest thin ribbons posted elsewhere, this thread needed a 'bump'.

Hmmm...at the moment I have only two thin ribbons in my collection anyway (the Peschel and the Dunlap) and I didn't post them here as I thought it would be better not to spam all potential threads with my megalomaniacal photo layouts... ;)

Thanks for bumping this one up, RBH. I'll put my last new thin ribbon up; the green Stetson Premier Stratoliner I got just before Christmas:

Very excellent! Bet it is soft. Looks similar to a 3x I have which is incredibly pliable and soft. Love the thin ribbon and it looks great on you:eusa_clap

That Strat is some gem, Mr. P. I could never get tired of seeing that lid.

So, Mario. How about the Dunlap again!

soft felt

Paladin, I have a Dobbs Hankachif felt that I really enjoy, but it's the same way.

When I take it off at night, I store it open crown, but to be on the safe side.

I don't know that I'd want all of my hats to be that soft, but it is a neat experience.

Your's is a beaut!

By the way ... incredibly off topic ... but I once got to spend an afternoon with the gentleman who became known for performing the theme from Have Gun Will Travel ... Johnny Western ... and in the 1990s he was still performing and still dressed all in black to suggest the Richard Boone connection. He was a very nice man.

You are also eligible for entry into the Campdraft Confederacy!!!! :D

Thank you!

What painful initiation process does one go through to become a member of the Campdraft Confederacy? :)
