J. Hückel´s Söhne Elastic Melone, measures ~ 58cm, 134 grams. Really unique liner color and in very good condition. Probably 1930s. This is from a non eBay seller.

Not sure of the age, maybe the 20s. I've had this Schoble for a while so I figure it's about time I posted it. The writing on the sweatband was there when I got it. Can anyone tell me how to clean magic marker off a sweatband without damaging it?

Gärner Wien Melone, size 58cm, probably 1920/30s. This is a wool blend stiff felt. Interesting liner with branch and factory addresses. This is a company listed in Österreichisch Hutmacher-Zeitung but never come across one of their hats so a rare find.

Purplesage - Nice find. I'd try a little lighter fluid on a cloth, followed by leather balsam. If that doesn't work I'd leave it rather than risking anything stronger.

That's a beautiful Schoble derby. I would advise leaving the writing as is... there would be a good chance of making a bigger mess trying to remove it.

Purlesage, dip a cotton swab into some rubbing alcohol and press/stroke lightly in a small area. If successful at removing the mark, do the rest.

Purplesage: Are you using an embossing filter on the sweatband stampings? The stampings seem reversed and quite unnatural ... very disturbing to my old eye

After seeing a Geo Eakles bowler with a sharks gill ribbon, i've really been wanting to send several bowlers in to have different ribbon treatments put on to give each one a bit more individual personality apart from their already unique block profiles.

Heres the first one that was done by a local milliner the results were promising but next time I'll definitely send it into Optimo or another reputable hatter.

the bowler is a J. Moore and Sons Featherweight.

Here is a bowler hat that my dad gave my son. I don't know anything about it other than what you can see here. He might have gotten it in London in '57 or so, but it is possible that it dates to later than that. The felt is stiff, of course, but fairly thin. The brim is curled almost 180 degrees on the sides. It isn't marked as to size, but it might be around a 7 1/2, maybe 7 3/8. What can anyone tell me about it?

OCMH - If someone had asked about putting a coloured ribbon on a bowler I'd have said it wouldn't work, but you've shown it works pretty well.

jhe888 - I think the bowler is a bit newer than 57 from the Harrods logo (early 70's?). As to who made it for them I'm not sure - they've used several hat manufacturers over the years. My guess is Failsworth, back when they were producing decent hats, but it could be Olney or Christies.

My guess would be late 50s early 60s based on construction and block/form but it could be later as Richard suggests. I wish someone could still make one like this today. I like the longer nap.

I'll ask my dad if he knows when he got it. I know he was in London in '57 right after he graduated from college, but it is also possible my grandmother got it for him when they took a trip to London later. My grandparents took trips overseas and it was the sort of thing my grandmother would have bought. It couldn't be much newer than the middle '70s, though.

A bit more research - that style of logo was in use in the 60's - it changed early 70's. So it's definitely not newer than very early 70's. I did a trawl and there's the same model from an ebay auction that comes with the original box, and that certainly looks late 50's/early 60's so 57 is possible: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ORIGINAL-...rrods-of-London-Box-The-Welbeck-/161145105413 The printing on the tag looks about right for that period too. unfortunately I don't recognize the tag code (L75079) someone else might and this would confirm the maker...
