Sometimes the French tendency to keep things to themselves pays off. This one flew under the radar because the seller had it listed to ship inside France only. He was very forthcoming however when I asked him if he would ship it to Les Pays Bas.
We had a deal in no time at all. What can I say? The stars aligned for this one.
Guiseppe Borsalino was an apprentice at Berteil and apparently Berteil didn't forget their pupil when they stopped making hats themselves. Borsalino made this for his old teacher (well, sort of).
Borsalino Nutria in Rodio colour. Felted edge at 5,5cm and crown 10cm at the pinch. Ribbon in the colour Asfalto. The bow is attached further inward to leave the bow ends loose. Liner is not Borsalino, but Berteil. Very lightweight hat at 85 grams and the felt is not as "springy" as other nutria hats, but shapes with no effort at all. I get the feeling this was a top of the line hat.
Biggest surprise: it's not all that old actually: 1980!
