The age & possible value of a Stetson hat?

Hi..
I'm wondering if someone can help me out? I'm actually trying to help out a friend of mine whose son has recently passed away and she found this Stetson hat of his that he never wore. She's looking to now possibly sell it but has no idea how old it is and what it might be worth. Someone in her family told her it's worth $900....and I'm thinking it's not. I messaged Stetsons consumer service with an email and photos and didn't get a reply. So I was wondering if anyone here knows any info?
Thank you.

There are many Stetson hats sold every day on eBay... I would search completed listings to get a sense what a similar hat might bring at auction.

not a snowballs chance in hell it is worth $900

and I would guess that it is from somewhere between the '70s and '90s or newer since it has the cm and fitted size ... I would think on the later side of that dating

the answer you don't want is that it is worth what someone will pay for it ...take a look at eBay

what is in your favor is that it is a desirable size ... what is not in your favor is that I have seen those hats sell at auction for anywhere from $75 to $200

I'm sure someone else will chime in ... I am no western expert ... especially not ones this current

looks to be in nice condition and is a very nice hat

One of the tobacco companies had those as a point redemption gift for cig package stickers. They did the promotion a few times over the years. If it is not the Marlboro hat then it is the model they traded in. As a result there are a lot of them and the value is around the $125 range when I've seen them sell. The price may go higher as weather cools. I agree it i mid 80's to early 90's. The western I got in the 70's had carbon form printing and I don't think bar code was used till latter 80's.

Thank you for the all the replies so far. I'm definitely going into this blindly to help my friend. I have looked at some eBay listings but wasn't finding this one exactly since I wasn't sure on age. Thanks for letting me know it's mid 80's to early '90's that helps a lot. Also I'm not sure about sentimental value seeing as though he never wore it, I'm thinking it's not to sentimental and since she's asking me to find the value she's definitely willing to get rid of it. It's just finding the right price to start at and going from there. I've not seen to may people wear hats like this in my area and I think she wants to try and sell it local seeing as though she doesn't use the internet I'm sure she's not willing to do eBay and ship an item.

Model COWB--R in D4 Ranch tan color.
Ebay is flooded by those. Not a desirable hat.
I got one pretty cheap some years ago. It's my walking hat. If it gets ruined beyond repair, it's easy to find other one.

Based on my time in the Western Wear retail side of things; new, off the shelf, about $150.00 max. That model is no more than 20 years old. I sold a number of them at Howard and Phil's back in the day and later at Boot Barn. Hope this helps!

I'd sell it to the family member who thought it was worth $900, (hopefully that's a brother-in-law) for say...$850! That's what I would call a win - win!

LOL, right..if it was only that simple. I guess that person obviously doesn't want it either.... Must not be there style.

If it was a cigarette points reward item, perhaps the $900 value was from all the butts someone had to smoke to get it.
Just guessin...

I could see that being the case here for sure. I know that he was a big smoker and so was his mother. So it's very possible that this true. Thanks for the info.

I have that exact hat. Its even stamped "Marlboro" on the sweat. Paid $40 @ an antique store. Mine is actually a decent felt. Ive converted it seveal times and it ended up as an Open Roads style fedora. Its been blocked so many times that it makes a great rain hat because it doesn't shrink much anymore.

Does it have a BOP imprint? Stetson made several models that resembled the BOP, most notably the Austral. Is that a no. 1 Quality die on the sweat too? That was the bottom of the Stetson quality scale (though, to be sure, a very nice hat with quality well exceeding today's hats).

Putting a dollar value on something is difficult as ebay prices are fickle. That's a pretty old one though, so I would guess north of $200 for a 7 1/8
