MJ,

Don't paint it with the stripes! :D

I've been spending quite a bit of time in the Coahuila desert on my motorcycle. Been thinking of getting some type of jeep so I can start taking the wife along.

The zebra stripes look great. I've always like that paint scheme on a white truck. The old Willys looks like a lot of fun. Since we're sharing adventuring vehicles, here is mine

Owning this is actually what sent me to the Fedora Lounge; one of my Land Rover contacts mentioned it as a place to get ideas for safari outfitting. It took me a while to find it here, but he obviously meant this very thread :)

Hallelujah!! An outside referral, not simply to the Fedora Lounge, but to the Adventurers Thread specifically. That says a lot!!

Mojave - love the zebra stripes!!

Thanks, Mike! It will, once I get the design together. My buddy did his truck with a vinyl sticker kit, and it has held up very well. They can design the stickers however you want them to look, and then you apply them yourself. The upside is that if I ever get tired of it, I can change it up!

Nels, that Land Rover is awesome! Series II? I had my eye out for one of those in particular because of the desert roof, like you have on yours. Such a simple idea to keep the inside of the vehicle cooler, but no one else seems to have caught on to that! I wish I could adapt that to my Willys.

Scott, I'm not sure what the original color was, but it was almost certainly not white. Here's the only colors available for Willys vehicles in 1948, and only five of those were availbel for the CJ2A:

Note that one of the colors is Michigan Yellow!

Nice looking gear, Alexi, but what is all that awful white stuff all over the ground?! Looks like horrible stuff!

Here's my latest piece of adventure gear:

Willyssm.jpg

It's a '48 CJ2A, mostly....

Under the hood it has a Ford 289 with headers, dual exhaust, and a Holley 650 4-barrel. It's built for power, not speed, though, and this thing will crawl up and over a house. First gear is a granny gear, and 4th gear is a 21% overdrive, so it gets down the highway pretty well, too. In low range it will just about climb straight up a wall. For those Willys fans out there, yes, that's a CJ3A windshield. It has a pretty much bullet-proof Dana 44s front and rear, with Warn manual lockers in the front. Right now I'm running the 27" tires on it, but am trying to decide between a couple sets of 31s.
That's awesome! I can't believe you've been holding out on me; you know what a Jeep aficionado I am! Bravo! :eusa_clap

Sorry, buddy! Didn't mean to hold out, but I've only had it since last Wednesday! Naturally I had my Reserves this past weekend, and Friday it was blowing so hard I could hardly stay on the road. I wish it would warm up, but you know the old saw, "careful what you wish for!" It'll be 110 soon enough.

It suits you so well! I wish you a lot of luck, fun, and adventure with it!
It could not have happened to a nicer chap!

Thanks, old boy! I appreciate that!

Here's what I have in mind for the zebra striping:

I want it to have that center line, like a zebra really does. I haven't found a good front view yet, but I'm working on it.

That's perfect! For the front I would just follow that same pattern down. I love the center spine; makes the look.

I love the drawings. Are you sure you weren't an engineer in another life? ;) lol

If you've seen it twice, that means it's seen you 10 times as often. It's cunning natural camouflage just makes it hard for your eyes to focus on it. As to the driver, well if you can see the car, he's likely preparing to attack from behind. Best be careful and not approach to close if you see it again. So far you've been lucky.

Thanks, glad you like it. It's a 1963 Series IIA 109 Station Wagon. As much as the Jeep is an American icon, the Land Rover is the classic African safari vehicle. I've had this one for a bit over three years now.

The truck is what brought me here. I started taking the truck around to local car shows and it got a huge reaction from people. In the U.S. they are pretty rare but everyone knows them from movies and TV as safari trucks. So, my thought was to play up the safari aspect more and start outfitting the truck and myself to fit the role better. Here's a couple of photos of where I ended up last year:

Nels, that is a really classic set up, and I'll bet you get a lot of comments, especially in downtown Boston. You've probably been checked out by our pal Hemingway at one time or another! If you ever sojourn to the left coast, be sure to look me up; we'll do some interesting trips to Death Valley or that sort of place!

M@8, sorry, but you're about thirty years too late to talk me out of the zebra stripes! lol I was hooked after watching reruns of Daktari, and the zebra-striped Land Rover at Jungle Larry's Safari Island in Cedar Point pushed me over the top long ago!

Shortly after the opening of the Cedar Point park, his family moved to none other than Naples, Florida (just a short drive from where I live) and started Jungle Larry's Zoological Park. He's a local legend.
