That was my guess, based on the rifle. Nice pic. And those double hats were, by the way, worn to supposedly protect against sun poisoning. Jim Sutherland wore one sorta like Stewart Granger's in "King Solomon's Mines". That's come up before around here somewhere.

They are among a small group of animals that if shot and not killed directly will attempt to exterminate their antogonist, the hunter. I understand both Grizzley bear and wild boar will do the same.

Look what I found today while shopping at Cabelas.. (they don't sell this "model" btw) I think I'll go with something similar to one of these for my backcountry stuff and a nice colorfull nylon job for when the whole family comes along!

Those are great, Mike! What are the (approximate) dates on those? I notice that a lot of men are wearing shorts, and seem to be wearing puttees with them! Is that right, or d they just have very thick full hose or something? When were the shorts first worn as a uniform item?

Really makes me want to go out an get a Wolseley helmet!

Mike (or anybody else) is there any chance you can ID that rifle that the guy in the tree has, the one standing watch (it looks like)? I looks like an Enfield of some form or fashion to me, but I'm not an expert on such firearms.

I think it must be WWI, or just after. Some of the officers are wearing open tunics, which didn't come in until 1913. The equipment is a bit odd, as some are carrying MLE (long-lees) by the looks of it, which should have been fazed out, but if it's a native unit it's more then feasible that they would have older rifles. Shorts were introduced unofficially during WWI-ish, and where pretty much just cut down trousers, and officialised in the mid 1920's (when they became wonderfully baggy and heavily starched), and were indeed worn with long puttees (sometimes over hosetops, with the top of the hosetop folded over the top of the puttee) until the mid 1930's, when short puttees replaced them. Some other interesting things are the brown Slade Wallis belt (obsolete by this time) and Cawnpore helmet (not made official uniform until the mid 1930's, although they were worn beforehand) one of the officers is wearing. the fedora type hat an OR is wearing, and some of the chogi shirts. Very interesting, and at times intriging, photos!

I think it's a magazine Lee Enfield, or Long Lee, which preceded the SMLE. He also seems to be wearing the shorter bayonet for it on his leather equipment

Hmm... I do indeed know what I'm talking about then. Thanks for that little tidbit Cobden. So, wouldn't that put the photo as a pre-WWI date? And what significance does the shorter bayonet play in the scheme of things?
