when the newspaper guy cut open the stack (just thrown from the truck that never came to a complete stop) and sold you the first copy (normally one deep as the first one was usually ripped or wrinkled). But the internet killed it and now they are, as said above, magazine stands (with soda and candy), but the life went out of them when the newspaper culture died. I appreciate what your friend is doing, but I think he is going to be pulled perforce on line.

I remember getting one of those Friday PM editions just after the bundles had hit the corner right in front of us in Lower Manhattan. That was the day Lee McPhail handed down the infamous "George Brett pine tar bat decision." That was a rambunctious crowd around that newsboy all shaking their rolled up papers in the air and making harsh statements in frustration.

Truthfully, he isn't doing it out of some sort of "traditional" or "moral" high ground. It's primarily more of a financial concern and, for the time being, the Internet and television are luxuries rather than necessities for him--luxuries he can't really afford easily. And he does realize his days are numbered--it's more a matter of "when" than of "if". But for now, he makes do with what he has.

Completely understand and I wish him the best. Fortunately, the base entry points are coming down - so that should help and, hopefully, he'll see his situation improve.

Same as "there's no pockets in a shroud". Means, you can't take it with you when you die so might as well loosen up and spend it while you are above the sod.

The ancient Egyptians tried it by entombing their deceased Pharaohs with untold riches, and it didn't work for them. Then again, Tutankhamun died centuries ago and he's still on tour generating money, so maybe they were on to something after all. I'd bet Michael Jackson would still be touring if they could legally figure out a way to dig him up and put him in a similar display.

That's good news for Keith Richards and The Rolling Stones!

That Keith is still with us - after the life he has led - is the real miracle; what he looks like is beyond the point.
Ah, I understand. He attributes that to the use of "high quality" drugs and the fact that he had some form of self-control by not constantly increasing the "doses" the way most users do. [huh] He's still alive and kicking, unlike many of his contemporaries, so there may have been some method to his madness after all.
