Tell Me About Leather Tailors

I am told that taking a jacket to a leather tailor is probably not worth it. It is supposed to be very expensive and also difficult to find a good one. I would need the hem shortened by 1 or 2 inches, assuming the pockets don't get in the way making it impossible.

I am told that starting price is around $200. Also, that motorcycle leathers are stitched differently and the tailor may not know this.

So any experience with getting a jacket altered that you could share?

^ Don't go to a traditional tailor who also occasionally works on leather.

I have a wonderful leather tailor (Studio City if anyone is interested). He is a leather craftsman by trade -- he used to make leather jackets -- now he specializes in leather purses. His workmanship is stellar. He is stupid expensive and, therefore, I use him sparingly. That said, when the need arises and the jacket is worth it, I bite the bullet.

Look for a motorcycle leathers repair specialist, they should be able to sort you out like a normal tailor would for regular alterations.

Just an estimate. What do you think shortening a jacket would cost?
