Tea Suggestions

Ham on the Street on the Food Network just had a show on sandwiches, and they had a section on tea sandwiches. Here's a link.

One trick I've used for other things but never thought of for sandwiches that he used on the show - for the tea sandwiches, he cut them with an electric knife. Nice clean cuts and no "squishing" the bread and filling.

A little late for Rosie's party, alas, but a great tip for future tea party givers!

And now I'll tiptoe back out of Powder Room...

Oooo, I found this tip and it worked great, freeze the bread before preparing the sandwiches then before actually making them, spread with the teensiest (made up word) bit of margarine. The bread defrosts nicely right after cutting, no squishy sandwiches and the margarine keeps the bread from getting soggy. Worked like a charm!

Rosie, your menu sounds fabulous, and so does Decodolls! Well I can give you a few ideas of the English tea, and Scottish High tea. English tea staples - scones with jam and clotted (perhaps what you call Devon) cream. Tea loaf. Victoria sponge cake with jam and fresh cream. Tea - with milk, or with lemon, and chamomile. Home made lemonade (and if you need booze - champers. But cava is obviously the cheaper option. Pink would be lovely). Tired cake and sandwich holders. Porcelain cups. Little pots for the jam and butter to go in. Sandwiches - cucumber (with crusts removed), roast beef and horseradish, smoked salmon and cream cheese (with some dill).....
Scottish high tea round here is something else - I live in a rural community, lots of farmers, and in Sunday at about 4 they all turn out to the local pubs in their tweeds, the ladies put their lipstick on and hats (it's soooooo sweet!). Cups of tea, bread and butter (lots) and a meal such as battered haddock and chips, or steak and ale pie THEN a MASSIVE plate of cakes, scones, you name it. It is SO much food and you have to skip lunch to be able to manage it!

That teapot cake looks lovely - I take it you're going to do it more in pastel colours?

Sorry to presume it's an English style tea btw - am sure America has a history of tea parties as well! I used to have a little tea set when I was a little girl and do pretend tea parties - it's a dying tradition now which is so sad. Obviously we all still drink a LOT of tea over here now though, and if ever you get some bad news or are shaken up by something, there's only one cure - a cup of tea. Obviously if it's after 6pm then there's the option of a stiff gin as well lol

Oh sorry Rosie, have just read your party report!!!!!!!

It sounds FABULOUS! I would have LOVED to have been there. Lots of things I haven't heard of food wise (but would love to find out lol ) and a great selection of teas. Did you take any pics at all of the food?

Rosie, it's all beautiful. Love the little orchid and cala lily vases, and the lollies are divine!

It you tea doesn´t just sound fabulous - it also looks like it. I love the lollipops and the whole setting. I wish someone would do a party like that and I was invited!
