Where's that video of the girl screaming again when I need it? :p

If your tattooist is tearing through your skin, he's doing it wrong.

Tattooing hurts less than epilating leg hair. I know; trust me.

I don't think Mr. Powers has any tattoos. I think he's just trying to scare folks out of gettin' 'em.

Funny, I've eaten Swiss Cheese for years, and it's never torn through my skin. Are you sure the folks at your delicatessen like you, Mr. Powers? ;)

The needles are teeny. You have to look at the bloody things through an eye loup! I hated soldering those things.

Some places are worse than others, but overall not much worse than a sunburn.

"The Screaming Girl" is a pitiful creature without any sense of personal dignity what so ever.
IMO the tattooist should have laid down his needle and refused to work on such a distasteful individual.

Would hate to be the midwife when her childbearing days arrives...

well there are only a few tats I have seen that really impressed me. they were a series of numbers on the inside of the lower arm....

rest don't do much for me. My son got one it says: I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine in Hebrew on the back of his upper arm. At least that one is not what you see everyday.

for me, I would have a hard time FINDING a spot for a tat that is not covered in hair so it would need to be REALLY special

Now my opinion should have no affect on YOUR choice though, should it;)

Esquire magazine was once talking about tattoos and said that when considering them, you should ask yourself whether you still wear any of the t-shirts that you bought at rock concerts you attended more than 5 years ago.

That did it for me - a dilletante like me's never believed in anything strongly enough to want to have it inked into me. That said, I've no problem with them on others and they can be very attractive.

As to the issue of what they look like as you age, and how were they worn by Golden Agers - a friend of mine was a nurse and told a story about preparing an elderly lady for surgery. This lady had had a 'good war' if you take my drift, and was quite open about it. In particular, there were a number of tattoos in places the sun rarely shone, none of which left much to the imagination. The one which struck my friend speechless, however, was one just above the cleft of the lady's buttocks which read "for all those who went to the front".

Madam, I salute you.

Nope. They don't hurt a bit:

There's about 1,000 others but they use much more flowery language when they scream. :p

i just got mine finished on saturday. there was one area that was really irritating, but you didn't hear one peep from me. maybe a sigh or two and lots of feet tapping, but not one peep.
tattoos don't hurt...not like a gash you might get from biffing on your bike or a broken bone you might get from skiing...but i find that they are irritating...in a good way.
pictures forthcoming.
and the next tattoo is in the works. :p

I've got two. A breton boar on my right arm with a tribal armband motif. And a kwakiutl healing frog on my left shoulder. At some point I am getting either a 18th century clipper ship on my left arm or a kraken wrapping around one of my legs.

A little pain is good, especially when it is controlled.

Injury is another story. Injuries are annoying.

Our generation hasn't felt sufficient pain. No draft. No massive mobilization for war. They want to know what pain is like. They know life is incomplete without it.

(Somewhat pretentious sermon over.)

They could always enlist or listen to old Gordon Lightfoot records if they want to experience pain. Now those records are more painful than anything I can possibly remember and I have had a major surgery to save my life once.
How about scarification?

I dunno. In the avatar, you look pretty scared of that hand. ;) Is there a needle in it? :p

Not the hand - you can't see the giant monkey attached to it. In his other hand, he has a pair of leggings - those fugly things truly terrify me!

A little controlled cutting is fun.

Some find it titillating.

Gordon Lightfoot, though? Not titillating.

...I wanted to know what the pain of military experience was like, so I joined up. I did not get a tattoo or cut myself. You tell me what the bigger commitment is.

...in other words, leave the service outta this.

To some, tattoos are cool. To others, they're not. To some, it's self-expression, to others, it's trashy.

Butting heads over it isn't going to change anything.

Service is a WAY bigger commitment. There is ZERO doubt in my mind. I suspect few will disagree with this. You can die in the service. You cannot die from a tattoo (normally).

You are perfectly correct to be miffed that I mentioned the military here: however, what I meant was to jokingly infer that tattouage was a rather mild substitute for risking one's life and dedicating 2+ years to a higher institution (such as one's nation).

No butting heads with you on this subject, at least. We are in full agreement.
