False dichotomy. Pierced ears are barely noticeable, and don't appreciably change the size, shape, or configuration of your ears -- it's not anywhere near the same thing as having the tips pointed so you look like Mephistopheles.

Theres always a protagonist when these come up. Not even close. That's like equating someone who has a shot of tequila every month to a binge drinker. Good try though.

Dhermann wrote that he doesn't like "self mutilation". He didn't specify the degree. Ear-piercing qualifies, though obviously not to the degree of head-bageling.

And yes, some people do not like the idea of ear-piercing. (See below.) Why should I automatically assume that Dhermann has no problem with it? Without asking him, how can I know for sure?

At one time, my grandmother found her daughters' pierced ears horrific- I believe her words were "I don't know where I went wrong with my children that they turned into w***** and put holes in their ears" when my mom got her ears pierced in her 20s (this was the 1960s).

Yes, it's all body modifications, just on different ends of the scale. Anyway, I used to have pierced ears (when I was like 8) but honestly, knowing I had a piece of metal jammed through my flesh always made me queasy and I only had them for about a year. Can't stand watching others insert earrings either (neither can my sister, who is a doctor and wants to specialise in surgery; she can saw off legs without batting an eyelid, but earrings give her the creeps, so one can't help but wondering what Mum did to us ;) ).

Skin insertions (there are people with all sort of shapes under the skin in all sorts of places, not just bagels on the forehead) just looks like a bad case of the bubonics to me, and I can't help but imagining how they must hurt to have done. No problem with tats, though. And as always, to each their own.

Come on, at least be honest. It was the same in the hipster thread. Just an "honest inquiry" meant to demote those in question to trivial, close-minded folks. I'll come right out and say it - some things I find repulsive, and don't buy into the "anything goes" mentality. If I'm an old codger because of that attitude, so be it.

I'm sorry, but you've both failed to read my intention correctly. I didn't have an agenda here: I was trying to find out (for my own edification) whether Dhermann's abhorrence of self-mutilation included ear-piercing. In other words, I was trying to understand the scope of what he meant, rather than assume that I 'caught his drift'. With all due respect, my question was addressed to Dhermann, not to you. I'll await his reply. There's no reason for a tempest to blow around in this teapot of a question. Kindly keep all paranoia in check.

Did you try sending him a personal message?

It's just people doing something relatively harmless that they think is fun. Is it really any weirder than Mr Grey Suit getting off work at 5, and cosplaying all night, literally becoming a Pokemon character? This scenario is very common in Japan, and no-one bats an eyelid at that, even from within the business Mr Grey Suit works at, in Japanese cities (at least they don't seem to). There seems to be a healthy acceptance that what happens in your free time has no bearing on your work.

Not saying I think that would be fun (the cosplay or the pastryface), but diversity is the spice of life. I thought I saw a lot of "different" looking people in London. Then I visited Japan.

Rather be and look interesting than a drone, is what I say.

I thought the mainstream Japanese looked down on Otakus. What makes you think cos-play is quite common? One wonders what the fedora lounge equivalent board is like in Japan. Bet they have lots of posts like "Why Neon Genesis Evangelion cos-players. Why".
