I have only just caught up with this thread. I sported a full beard for years - from my teens in fact. This was primarily due to the fact that having somewhat sensitive facial skin meant that for years no matter what method of shaving I tried I would often be left with rashes and soreness. Also being on the hirsute side meant not only could I grow beards quickly and easily but if I shaved in the morning I could have a five o'clock shadow by early lunchtime so it was just easier to let the beard grow and trim as and when required.
I never found having a beard a barrier to relationships as I prefer people take me as they find me, indeed having met and married my wife while sporting a beard she says she dislikes me not having facial hair of some sort!
For the past couple of years after finding that I can in fact now wet shave and get away with it I have sported a handlebar moustache ...and have to say I rather like the attention it generates.
