Blue is much stiffer and gives more matte finish. Red is much better smell, stiffness and shiny look.

I'd use red if I could find it from here.

Depends on the hold you want... The red is a softer pomade with a higher shine, and it holds similar to Black & White or Murray's Super Light.
The blue is a heaver formula, still with a high gloss shine, but a little less than the red formula.
Both are excellent, it just depends on the hold you're wanting out of your hair dressing. If you want the heaviest possible, go for the blue.

Lots of info here:

Blue takes longer to melt with the hair dryer. It's a heavier formula. Stronger hold, I find, but more pasty looking.

okay, I read all 25 pages and got a lot of good info but there was one thing I'm curious about. When I used Murrays Id feel like I was ripping my hair out of my scalp and id like comb my hair with the murrays and I would get clumps of hairs on my comb, I'm only 19 so I'm not going bald yet, murrays was just tough on my hair. The SWG Blue from what I've read and what ppl have said is like murrays hold wise, but does it feel like you are ripping out or hair? Is it rough? And as ridiculous as murrays is to wash out?

I've had that same problem. I disliked it so much that I've switched hair styles to an older look with a combination of Brylcreem and Groom N Clean used together. However, I miss the hell out of my pomp, but I can't afford to replace anymore pillow cases. Does SGB make a water soluble? I want the old Murray's hold, or at least something close to it, but I don't want to get a dry crackle later in the day (which I've heard happens with Layrite).

Well i did find a good combo for a pomp that I have been using is a Japanese pomade called Fiber Grease, I get it at Eddys Deluxe in Sacramento Ca or from their website eddysdeluxe.com but the problem with fiber grease is that its like $28. It holds like murrays, smells 1000x better than murrays AND it washes out. Problem is its expensive, however Rea the owner of the barber shop has her own pomade line called Cock Grease and in January or Feb of 2010 she will have a third formula of cock grease that is like fiber grease and way cheaper because with fiber grease its imported so it costs a hell of a lot more. So I use fiber grease as my main holder then I work in Black and White for added hold and shine and the awesome smell then I finish with purple can water soluable sweet georgia brown as the final shine.

The main reason I asked Red SGB vs Blue is because Im just looking for a temporary main holding pomade to substitute fiber grease until Jan/Feb, because i've only used purple SGB and it smells freakin' amazing but it has practically no hold unless your hair is short but i have a pomp so the purple tin i just use for shine.

Ive never used SGB Red or Blue so Im tryin to figure out which is best? I get the fact that Blue is stronger but I dont want to rip my hair out using it. Any insights?

Chad I did the same thing awhile back. I got tired of pulling my hair out trying to comb a pomp and went for a side part with a big quiff in front. I'm currently using the groom and clean too and I mix it with Wildroot. I ve found Wildroot has a stronger hold than Brylcreem and a deeper shine and seems to leave my hair felling healthier after I wash it.

Hrm, well, cost is a big issue for me. Being the Recessionista that I am, I don't want thin my hair OR my budget. If the scent is nice I'll try doing my same hairstyle with the SGB purple, even though it's over twice as much as the Murray's I was using. I suppose it'll even out, though, since I blow through this Brylcreem/Groom N Clean combo, which costs some $10 for about three months use.

Does anyone know how Hold Fast shapes up? It sounds like a dream come true, even though it's pretty expensive. Double that of SGB.

I've not had the problem of it pulling my hair out (Or I'd STOP USING IT STRAIGHT OFF BUB ;))
I use a hair dryer to warm the goop (Murray's, SGB, whatever) until it is pretty much liquified, and apply it (if it's hard to wash out, you may be using too much). Combs right through. And my body heat is enough to keep everything at least comb-able all day. But that's just me, with very straight hair.

Then again, I use mostly a dab of Brylcreem and a little TINY dab of Royal Crown these days as I want it to be rather sloppy.

I have tried Holdfast and it is very similar to original Layrite, i don't think it has as strong of hold as super layrite and it DOES harden after being in your hair for a bit.

yeah hold fast isn't the greatest, kinda a knock off of layrite which is fine its a quality product but eh, not for me. I'm trying to find somewhere to order the SGB from but the normal place I get it from http://www.thegreaseshop.com but they seem to be out of stock .. >.< and where I'm from the closest place to get quality pomades is about an hour and a half drive away.. :(

so then SGB Blue doesn't feel like you're tugging out your hair like murrays does when you put it in your head? Because thats why i stopped using murrays because when id put it in and comb my hair id rip hairs outta my scalp like it was christmas
