In addition to the mystery of my dark colored ribbons never acquiring visible sweat stains, another question has cropped up as a result of this thread.

I asked a hatter if he could convert some of the ribbons that he has on hand to puggarees, but he wasn't willing or able to do that.

Would any hatters do that?

If not, would that be because they don't have the skill to do it, or just because they don't want to do it?

When I searched other forum posts for info about puggarees, some posters here suggested to buy silk ties and then convert them into puggarees. So that led me to believe that if an average hat enthusiast can convert a silk tie into a puggaree ribbon, then hatters should likewise be able to convert their non-puggaree ribbons into puggaree ribbons?

But is that not actually so? If not, how come?

The answer lies in the question; how much are you willing to pay for a custom puggaree? Turning a silk tie into a puggaree style ribbon is very doable, if the tie is wide enough. How much are you willing to pay for this very time intensive operation? Turning good grosgrain ribbon into a puggaree makes little sense to me. Why not buy one already made? As well, good ribbon in the very wide widths needed for a puggaree is virtually impossible to obtain.
