Suspenders or belts?

Suspenders or braces, like pocket squares and ties, should pick up some higlight / color from the rest of your outfit but, IMHO, matching suspenders and tie, etc. should be avoided.

I can not remember the name of the movie, but it reminds me of a character who described his coordinating outfit by showing a mushroom belt, mushroom lining in his, coat, usw.

Good advice. The boss in Office Space wears matching tie-and-suspenders sets, and looks awful. Of course, he also wears suspenders and belts at the same time.

How about the leather parts, do they come in colors to match your shoes? I have a thing about my leather matching, is it something I need to get over?

Nicholas Antongiavanni in his new book The Suit ( a must for anyone who frequents this website) said it best, " There has never been, then, a well-dressed man who has not worn suspenders; on the contrary, he has always worn them...belts are everywhere inoffensive but always uncomfortable".

'Nuff said.
Is he saying well dressed men only wear suspenders? Somebody had better tell this guy, although he looks neither badly dressed nor uncomfortable.

Don't believe everything you read in books. ;)

Yes, and yes. They do come with black, brown and burgundy/cordovan/oxblood/merlot/whatever leathers. But matching brace leather to shoes isn't really necessary, unlike belts. And it's virtually out of the question when it comes to braces with the classic white "cat-gut" ends.

If you want to customize your braces, contat Albert Thurston, who do top-quality custom-made ones.

Have to admit I've not given the fasteners much thought. My favourite braces were made with dark fabric fasteners. I have a few with leather fasteners but not in a color or texture that matches my shoes. Perhaps they will revoke my dandy status for this lapse?

What drives me nuts is that I am surrounded by juvenile cretons that can't resist grabbing the suspender to snap them on my back. And you know, if i cut their head off and put it on a pike out front, i'd be the one that went to jail. Sometimes life is so unfair.:rage:

Although definitely not a vintage tune, harken back to the mid 70's and the Vickie Lawrence hit, The Night That the Lights Went Out in Georgia, to one line that tells it all..."And that's one body that'll never be found..." In other words - on the pike in the yard is a little too showy, a little too calling attention to yourself. What's more important - getting even, or letting everyone see you've gotten even? And as you say, it's somewhat frowned upon and legislated against. lol :p lol :p

Isn't the wry little smile and snicker to yourself, when someone mentions "And what ever became of the little Smith boy? He was such a terror!" enough?

I have several dress pants that i have had suspender buttons put into so i can wear them with suspenders I'd like to wear to work. I also have foreign fatigue pants that have suspender buttons and like to wear them when the weather is cool and there is yard work to do.

For these purposes, I deliberately cultivate a somewhat intimidating persona. It cuts out many of life's more annoying vagaries. (And I do prefer suspenders, although with the wrong pants there can be discomfort in some areas if they pull up too much and your pants do not have a low enough inseam.)
