I think this particular hat is an anomaly -- and I'm not just saying that because it's mine lol
The fedora's felt is weighty enough to not be cheaply floppy. It certainly doesn't need a wire. My guess is that it was custom made for someone who requested that a wire be sewn into the brim. In any case, I'm quite happy with the hat, and that's what matters.
