Summer style...how do you keep it when the heat kicks up?

I don't wear shorts for the same reason I avoid Panama hats -- they're not my style. If I were to entertain ancestral considerations, I'd be walking around Miami in a kilt. Hmm, linen kilts anyone?

Linen kilts, sheep skin panamas, straw flat caps, converse sneakers with cats paw half soles and heels, patent leather engineer boots... you have opened up a beautiful new world!

I just want to add that, for me, one indispensable article of clothing is the Breton sailing shirt. I must have fifteen of them, mostly in different color combinations. You can get them in different cotton weights, and I think they look great with jeans and a jacket. The ones I have are by Saint James and Armor-lux and are incredibly comfortable and last forever. Check out Saint James Boutique.

Now this is something I had forgotten about completely. Good call.

I'm in kind of the same boat. I just don't look good in shorts. My legs are muscular, very, but thin by my standards. The last thing I want to do is show those when I go in public -- unless I'm working out.

I dream of a climate like that. . . .

I went to NOLA for the first time when I was 20yo for Mardi Gras and stayed for six months. Since then, I've been back many times and must say It's my favorite town in the U.S. The heat, however, in the summer is even worse than Miami, as there's no air movement. Love the locals, though.

I grew up on Bourbon Street, in the days when the French Quarter was a neighborhood rather than a theme park. My high school was the one from which, many years before I got there, Lee Harvey Oswald dropped out. Now, after having traveled and even lived in other places, I'm truly burned out on this city. I wish I could relocate.

I'll tell you what, it is so nice to be in northern Norway. I don't miss the over 40 Celsius summer days in Melbourne, Australia at all. That's just too much and especially the extreme heat for months on end.

It's very, very nice to live in a place where summer is a pleasure when she comes, and she buggers off before she outlives her welcome! Plus there's always cheap flights to the Med if you want some warmth for a time but you don't have to live with it for more than you want ;)

I prefer long-sleeve linen shirts. White. Keeps the sun off my arms.
Linen pants. Not shorts. I figure that not wearing shorts in public is the simplest thing I can do for the good of humanity.
A linen vest (to cover my suspenders - suspenders instead of a belt means my pants can be looser at the waist).
And a semi-caledo straw hat.

Keeps the sun off my head but yet allows good ventilation.

It's amazing to me how many of you advise against shorts. When I think of summer I think of shorts. I wear them and I feel like they look great. Now I'm talking at least 9" hem and of the khaki variet (plaint front), but that's just me. Things I will add this year...linen shirts, short sleeved button downs, and some leather docksiders. I'm still reading your responses, though.

I've never worn shorts as an adult. To me they are boy's wear. And besides ,jeans protect your legs from the sun. I cover up as much as possible - long sleeves, hat, etc, in summer.

For the record...THIS is the look I think of when I think of a man wearing shorts. This is the style that I am usually after come summer time.

Well, that's a common enough look around here too, although not always worn by men who are "in shape", as they say. I tend to wear the same clothes winter and summer. Generally black. Only difference in winter is a coat. Having special wear and colours for different seasons isn't really me ( or many people I know).

I've always liked the nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, Mediterranean look when it comes to summer wear. I'm relatively fit (though not as much as when I was in my 20's/30's) I think I can still pull off this look. If you've ever seen "The Talented Mr. Ripley", particularly the scenes zipping around the ocean on the Vespas , Wayfarer sunglasses, etc., then you'll get the feel of what I am after.
