I too am dying to know how much you sunk into that hat, Hemingway! It's gorgeous. Precisely what I'm looking for.

That mannequin - the one in the first pic - is wearing more or less exactly what I want for this summer. Any suggestions?

Jake, this type of panama is called an "optima"; its most prominent characteristic is the crown's vertical crease. Optimas are still made, but I think they have wider brims than this one has. The mannequin's hat has a 2 3/8 inch brim and the crown is 4 3/4 inches high. It's a Dobbs from the end of the '30s.

Cheers, Marc.

So the thing will be to try and find a decent panama at a decent price in the optimo/optima block...

What are Panama Bob's optimos like in terms of brim width and crown height - anybody know?

Any other suggestions?

The stamps I see generally say somthing like:

Hand Made in Ecuador

or

Hecho en Ecuador

or

Genuine Made in Ecuador

Some are a waxy type, some ink, and some are hot branding.
