Summer Hat Suggestions?

They had 1 hat with no liner because the liner would hold heat in plus you couldn't water your horse using the crown like a bucket from the famous Last Drop Stetson logo. They also used their hat as a pot holder & all kinds of utilities that we would never do. They were a rugged bunch but were not raised with air conditioning & such & could tolerate a lot more than our candy-a$$es can!

True for lightly woven straw. Oddly the expensive panamas are so tightly woven that they give no more ventilation than felt. And, as I said, for me felt only works where you don't have humidity which may explain why cowboys can wear their hats in the desert. If there's humidity straw is definitely better.

Aside from rain, there are times I just don't want to look like Sam Snead, if you can remember who he was.

To the OP, I suggest the Stetson Retro, a nicely shaped C-crown fedora in straw. Fairly inexpensive, as long as your head isn't too big. Aaron's has them, as well as Delmonico's and some others:

PS - those Milan straws from Miller are really nice looking. Milan is generally a tight weave, however - my old Stetson Milan straw is quite hot.

I assume you're just joking, but just in case you're not aware of it, NYC has the lowest crime rate of any large city in the continental US.

There are dozens of burgs in which you need to worry more about bullets than NYC.

The murder rate in NYC is 6-7 per 100K and in LA it is 10 per 100K. If there are no guns in NYC as per the Sullivan Law, it seems you still have to worry about being stabbed or beaten with baseball bats. With all of the guns in LA you'd expect everyone to be dead.

Quite a bit. I have an Akubra with vent holes and it makes a difference for me.

Wouldn't do me much good on a day like today. -24 F this morning driving in to work. cold, oh so cold. Hurry up summer.

My experience with a vented felt Akubra Angler is that on a hot, humid day in mid summer - the hat is HOT, regardless of the vent holes. I have never really noticed a difference provided by the vents, in summer heat, or in the cold. Still, I wear felt all year 'round. I need a hat that can take a shower. So I save my true Panamas for special occasions - garden parties, etc.

I do wonder about that seeming paradox: how can Panama hats be so reliable and popular down in the tropics if they can't survive a rain storm? Or do we just expect more of them? And expect our Panamas to keep their shape perfectly all the time?

Lefty, that is a gorgeous lid. The ribbon is a little bright for my money, but even saying that, I could imagine it would look great on. I'm certainly going to check it out...I notice that your photo looks a bit different than those on the Optimo website. Is that who you purchased it from? Your hat looks like it has a telescope as opposed to a center dent.

I got it from Optimo. Their photos make the hat look a bit dull but, as you can see, it glows in the sun. The crown is a teardrop (C-crown), but you can order your hat with whatever crease and ribbon you like. I was on a road trip with every intention of stopping at Optimo, so I got to look in the three huge boxes of ribbon spools they had in the shop, pull out the one I wanted, and describe the style of bow to be formed. The cost is pretty high, but it really is a fantastic hat. It's pretty much taken me off panamas and put me squarely in the milan camp.
