The button stance and cutaway front remind me a lot of that trimmed jacket of mine. But I just looked up his year of birth, which is 1891, so it's probably a bit later. He looks about the same age on this picture, which apparently is from 1925-26:

What's quite interesting is that in his paintings suit jackets are often depicted with the buttons equally close together. These below are actually all from 1922-23, so the date in the book might well be right!
Elsewhere on the FL we have discussed the failure of film makers to accurately costume male characters for the period of the film. Here's a good example from the 1945 film 'They Were Sisters'. The film opens in 1919 however the men simply wear 1940s suits with straw boaters and stiff collars to give it a period feel:
nowhere is the 1940s cut more obvious than in the shoulders of this suit:
