Suit Question

Ok, I don't post much and I lurke a little more.

So here is my question. I was just looking at the thread: 1940 Spring/Summer Mont. Ward suits

And, I noticed a lot of the mens' suits from that period seem to have a "high" waistline. Like, it looks like to me that the belt is up around the navel. Is this a stylistic feature, or is this how a suite is always worn, even today? It looks like the pants might be across the navel or over the navel.

See, I've been away from home for a while and when I get back I'll be looking for a job. It will most likely be a federal position so I'll probably be wearing suits every day. I'd like to do it with some style and a little old-school. I love suits from the 1940's and 1950's so that will be the look I'm going for.

Any advice would be great!!!!!!

Trousers were worn a bit higher in earlier decades. It was part of the fashion. I'm starting to see a bit of that coming around again, but it's not widely seen today.

Yes, high waisted trousers were the style in the 1930s-1950s. Usually navel height or higher.

I find high waisted trousrs much more comfortable than modern low waisted ones. Give it a try sometime and see how you like it.

They were actually worn on the waist or higher (rather than the hips, as many trousers, including all suit trousers I've seen in Sweden, are worn today). Hence the waistband of the trousers.

It's shocking how many people (especially men) can't place their waist, and think it's pretty much the top part of the hips.

Few if any OTR are truly high waisted. Some of the best I've seen (completely relative, mind you) are George brand and Ralph Lauren.

If you want truly high waisted trousers have some custom made or go with vintage.

Dickies regular work pants have fairly high waists. Very comfortable, but not the most formal article of clothing available.

I kind of have my belt around the fat part of my navel. Or rather the fat part around my mid section, that happens to be around my navel. So the suite pants should be just above my navel?

My dad always told me a gentleman wears his trousers at navel-level, so I always have gravitated to pants that fit like that.

The natural waist is at--or around--the navel. That is where dress trousers should be worn. It's also where a jacket's middle button (or pair thereof) should be located. It's a natural bisection of the upper and lower body.

Honestly (and particularly when worn with a belt), trousers stay up much more comfortably when worn at that height. Plus you look better

If my trousers ride much lower, my thighs rub together with no fabric between, the crotch is too low at that point

You know, it does seem to me that my pants would be a little more comfortable around my navel. I'm a little on the chubby side (but not too chubby) and the next time I go in to get a suite altered, I'll see what they can do with bringing the pants up.

Does anyone own a pair of these hollywood waist trousers that Magnoli Clothiers sells? I would like to see some pics if possible, cause the pics on the website don't look too great. Might be just the way they took the pics. I am concerned about how long the rise and the zipper is. Also, how wide the pants are.

HI,

I'm a bit wider in the middle than I am at both ends, so if I belted my pants at the navel they'd slip down and I'd have to walk around with one hand holding up my pants all the time.

Is there a trick to wearing pants navel high?

I've always worn my pants so that the belt keeps the pants from sliding down over my hip bones.

What am I doing wrong here?
