Mouton collars are cool but those lapels deserve to be shown at all times! They are too nice [emoji106]

JL has a muted gray/silver mouton in a fine 1/4” pile. The other colors are thicker 1/2” pile.

I have no reference for collar pile thickness. Is 1/4” too thin?

I measured the thickness of my three collars, they are all 1/2 minimum.
The thinnest one is my Aero at 1/2 exactly, it feels much thinner than my Schott or LW which are somewhat thicker than 1/2.

I would think 1/4 wouldn't feel or look great.

Thanks for the measurements, @Carlos840. It’s too bad the gray is just 1/4” because that would have been my first choice.

Saying that length isn't everything, density plays a big part.
The Aero is IMO the worst quality of the three, it is pretty bare and you can actually see the skin through the hair if you move the hair.
The Schott is the same length, but a bit denser, you can't see the skin on it.
The LW is curly sheep and is the thickest fleece i have ever seen, it is so thick and dense it feels a million bucks. It is 3/4" thick.

If the JL is 1/4 but super dense it could be nice.

My favourite is the LW by far, curly sheep is amazing.

Alan sent photos of what he's got in stock. Here are choices I'm considering...

Black/gray muted with 1/4" fur. Alan says it's a finer fur which is why it's shorter.

I guess you'd call this a light brown, 1/2" fur.

Darker brown, 1/2" fur.

Alan also has other colors but golden tan and red aren't appealing to me.

Depending on how expensive it is it might be worth trying the grey if you really want it.
Since its a removable collar it's not like its a non reversible decision.

Also 1/4 will definitely be more usable in various weather and heat.

The LW 3/4" i pictured above is so warm it would have to be cold to wear it.
The Aero on the other hand i can wear when it is warmer.

If you really want grey and it's not too expensive i would give it a go. Worst comes to worst you get a second one done if you think it is too thin.

^ bump, update?

Tony's WTB thread has me researching options for my Vanson Model E. I will likely go dark brown of some sort for contrast.

I see Vanson only offers a black mouton collar and a black faux collar. What are my options? (I don't see them listed on Johnson Leathers website).

Here’s a recent creation from Johnson Leathers that I have been drooling over. I especially love that light colored detachable shearling collar. Been thinking about reaching out to them myself to have them make me one for my LW CHP.

Aha! I see my jacket made it on here without me having to post it myself. It’s a real tank, and the mouton collar - chef’s kiss.

I believe that’s the second time your jacket has been posted here! In any case congratulations on an absolute masterpiece, as far as I’m concerned that’s as close to the perfect cross zip as you can get!

By far the best mouton is Cal leathers. I have all the major maker including Flight suits LTD. Cal at 200 is excellent. Lost worlds are good, but Stu is a dealbreaker for me. For the price, Arrow is terrible. I however, will be using my own items to make the collars. I did one for a Scott and branded leather and came as good as factory. I'm still waiting for those period correct snaps to finish my four Buco's and Cal's. Does anyone have some 50s period size #24 (5/8) caps and sockets fasteners for trade or sale? I will be going to Cal Leather's Shop Next week? To review, a little repair done to my poorly constructed LW.

Apologies for duplicating these photos from elsewhere on TFL, but I thought they might help - these are of my Aero Slimfit MC jackets, one in dark blue vicenza with a black mouton collar, the other is in black badalassi with an Irvin mouton collar. I particularly like the latter one as I think mouton looks best with a contrast (I also went with brown zip tape to match it with the collar and to break up the black of the jacket a little more), as others have already said in the thread above, and although I generally avoid epaulettes I think they also work well with mouton collars. Hope this helps?

In terms of thickness I agree with Carlos that 1/4” seems a bit too thin, and it would lack the full luxuriousness of the thicker piles - I would certainly aim for 1/2” and upwards - and that 3/4” curly LW fleece that Carlos has is absolutely stunning! The grey and navy options would be really great and unusual colours but imo only worth going for if you can get them in 1/2” pile or more…..
