Such great close-u pics. How do you do it?

I've been browsing through and seeing some fantastic close-up photos of pens and other smallish items. How do you do it? Technique or equipment? My camera is pretty sad and absolutely useless at close-in work. Can you recommend a good cheapish cam that would work?

I have a cheap-o panasonic digital camera with a macro setting.

8 mega pixels and gets in nice and close on the macro setting. Depending on where you are, you should be able to pick one up fairly cheaply.

I got change out of AUD$130 - you could probably do much better. I'd like to get a small tripod to steady my aim tho'
